I intended to listen to this novel while in Maine earlier this summer, but I didn't have time. I've been to Damariscotta, but this most recent trip, although we drove through, we stayed further up the coast. Based on the sense of the underlying community I got from overheard conversations and watching the town react to the discovery of a body in a ditch---an apparent hit-and-run victim---this novel seems to capture the vibe of the area well.

She remembered being happy. Right? She hoped she had been happy. What she didn‘t know was if she had been happy since. But nobody‘s happy all the time. It‘s no way to go through life. If you‘re happy all the time, you don‘t appreciate anything. You have to have contrast, to have low moments to bring out the high moments in relief 🦞

This one started a bit uneven for me, and it took some time to get into. But the second half whipped by in a flurry of rapidly turned pages. Some POVs were more effective than others (EJ and Allie had the most intriguing sections, IMO). Overall, a worthy read, and one I'd never heard of before #auldlangspine

Chelsea.Poole Yes! Same for me!! I started this book twice and put it aside then on the third go something clicked and I couldn‘t read fast enough. 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 I found the timeline a bit disorienting; apparently I can be led through different years and decades without much difficulty, but narrow it to months or weeks or days inconsistently and I‘m like, wait, what? 🤔 Also, if not for the fact that I am geographically familiar, I think I might have been hella lost. YET: The book was good! Really! The acknowledgments tipped the scale to a pick. 11 years in the writing?! I bow to you, sir.

It‘s a wicked snowstorm here in Maine today! There will be hours of shoveling and swearing later, but until then we are going to attempt to achieve maximum snow day vibes. 🐾❄️📚

I often get frustrated with marketing that insists on comparing a new book to a past sensation (see: any of the million books that are the "new Bridget Jones" or "Harry Potter for grown ups"). But when a book is actually a retelling of a classic, it should probably be mentioned in the blurb! Marketing this as a crime saga does a disservice to the book. It's a Gatsby retelling. And once I realized that, it totally flipped the reading experience ?

TheKidUpstairs Now that I'm into it, I'm totally engaged and engrossed. I think it probably would have happened earlier if that marketing people knew what kind of book they were selling. #AuldLangSpine @Chelsea.Poole @monalyisha 1y
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader @TheKidUpstairs It's actually one of my pet peeves about book marketing "X title meets X title" ? But you're right, I would like to know, especially considering I haven't read The Great Gatsby... 1y
TheKidUpstairs @Adventures-of-a-French-Reader it is absolutely a pet peeve of mine as well. Usually it does a totally sparrow to the book, which would stand better on its own without unnecessary comparisons. Unless the book is actually a retelling of a classic, or directly inspired by another book (as is the case here), then it seems like a pretty important thing to mention! 1y

BarbaraBB I didn‘t know that and I didn‘t think of it when reading and finishing the book 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
Hooked_on_books I‘m actually glad I didn‘t know (or realize) it was a retelling, as I often struggle with retellings and I really liked this. But I agree about the comps. They drive me crazy and sometimes even drive me away from a book (I didn‘t like The Secret History, which gets comped all the time and makes me less likely to read the book). 1y
Chelsea.Poole I didn‘t realize this was a retelling either! I mean not until I read this post 🫢 It also took me awhile to get into it. I didn‘t care AT ALL about plot/characters in the beginning but by the end I was flipping pages like crazy! 1y
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole yeah, it definitely took a while to get into. But now I'm almost done and it's super engrossing. I think I just found Andy's POV less engaging. EJ and Allie's parts are the most interesting for me. And I like the jumpy timeline, filling in blanks as it goes, but it did take a bit of time to get used to it. 1y

Unfortunately I didn‘t like this book as much as I expected. It is a slow read, and it takes so long to get to the point. A point that was obvious from the beginning. So, more than fiction, the book was about exploring class in Maine. And this could have been much more interesting without the plot and half of the characters. So it felt like a mixed bag to me.

squirrelbrain Oh no, I had high hopes for this one! 1y
Cinfhen I liked this one but it didn‘t make my #Top22of22 list 1y

Ruthiella Yes, I was also a little let down as I expected a mystery. 1y
Megabooks Too bad. I‘m sorry it wasn‘t a winner for you. 😔 1y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Me too. But it didn‘t really work for me. Many people loved it though. 1y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I knew it wouldn‘t be a real mystery thanks to some reviews but I couldn‘t figure out what it was instead. Maybe it should have been NF 1y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks Don‘t be sorry! I am reading so many winners thanks to you! 1y
batsy Nice review! If I give it a try I'll know to adjust my expectations 🙂 1y
