Ah, I revisited this read because of a reading challenge my cousin gave me to reread a book I hated in HS. How could I possibly have understood this book when I was 14 or 15?! And my god, I love it now. It was incredibly well researched, the writing was brilliant, and the storytelling style was original and fresh. It‘s a contender for best read of 2025.

Japan 1903:Ichi,daughter of an ama&a fisherman from Iojima, is sold into prostitution. In the Shinonome brothel she is trained in the art of pleasing customers but also attends school where Tetsuko,a failed prostitute from the family of a samurai, teaches “writing to women trapped in the prison of bestial desire” and finally to read and understand their account books since the women are often charged too much for food or clothes&deliberately kept

Anna40 Dependent on their owners. The novel is based on a real historic event when prostitutes went on Labor strike inspired by a shipyard strike in the UK. I loved the beautiful language, the rich depiction of place, the women& their struggles. “ ‘Because prostitutes are not human‘, they said. ‘Not human?‘ ‘Lower than humans.‘ Shinonome bit her lip and listened in silence as Tetsuko‘s voice continued like the steady dripping of rain. ‘The law (Livestoc (edited) 8mo
Anna40 Emancipation law) stated that prostitutes have lost their human rights and therefore are the same as livestock. (…)‘ “ 8mo

Hoopla library app audiobook. Based off a true story of the fin-de-siècle strike which was inspired by a recent shipyard strike of the time and area. Good for perspective and gleaning the female experience, historical perspective. I liked the characterization of our protagonist and the difference of her island dialect and character. More sexual themes and content than the book but not the film adaptation of Poor Things. Putting me in an Asia mood.

Ruthiella This one is definitely on my list. 👍 2y

Finally, I read this book too. I have seen the movie multiple times so there was no surprise is the novel. I really like this story but somehow I never liked the relationship between Sajuri and the president.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ yes that‘s a 6/5. I could not put this novel down. What a captivating story and eloquently written. I could nearly smell the air, envision the colors and scenes and feel the emotions throughout. The writing contained so many poetic figures of speech, I was stunned at the artistic way the author portrayed the story and brought it to life.

This book had been on my TBR for more time than I would have cared to admit!

It has made me clear all my misconceptions of geisha in general....this is definitely not a light read but I'm glad to have finally read it.

SarahBookInterrupted Excellent book…I read it long ago but it was one that stayed with me. 3y
SanjanaGhosh @SarahBookInterrupted I think it will stay with me for a long time too....I keep correcting myself that it's not an actual memoir! 3y
SarahBookInterrupted @SanjanaGhosh I forgot it was a fiction too. I know there is a movie. I haven‘t seen it but I‘m wonder if it does the book justice? Maybe I‘ll see if I can track it down. 3y
SanjanaGhosh @SarahBookInterrupted Just watched it yesterday and the movie left out so many characters altogether...no mention of the General who was Sayuri's danna...did not show Mr. Tanaka nor any part of her childhood...did not show the kimono maker and that whole ordeal during the war..like they just glided over it...it was quite disappointing. 3y
SarahBookInterrupted @SanjanaGhosh I hate when movies do that. When they leave out too much and it changes the whole experience of the book. Thanks for letting me know! 3y
