In the Mortal Instruments series, the Shadowhunters use steles to cut magical designs in their skin - giving them strength or speed or rapid healing etc. These instruments #cutlikeaknife I loved this series - a dense, complex world compared to a lot of YA fantasy I‘ve read, and I think Cassandra Clare writes it beautifully.
