The Embroidered Book | Kate Heartfield

I was thrilled that this novel won the Aurora Best Novel award last weekend. It's a historical fantasy novel that explores the lives of Marie Antoinette and her sister Charlotte, Queen of Naples and Sicily. I've read several of Kate Heartfield's novels and I love her writing!

kwmg40 I'd read this novel as an e-book, but I wish I had a physical copy, as the cover is so beautiful! 8mo

Birds of Maine | Michael DeForge

This comics collection, nominated for the Aurora Best Graphic Novel award, about birds living on the moon is decidedly weird. Even though I didn't understand completely how things like the fungal internet worked, I happily enjoyed the glorious artwork.

I loved the setting of this novel, which was nominated for an Aurora Best YA Novel award. It's the story of a young guardswoman in an alternate ancient India who finds herself in the midst of court intrigue and violence. It's a nice mix of fantasy, adventure, mythology and romance.

This urban fantasy story set in Toronto was nominated for an Aurora Best YA Novel award. I has a really interesting premise and fast-paced action, but I found the character development weak.

This retelling of H. G. Wells's novel has received Best Novel nominations for both the Hugo and Aurora SFF awards this year. It started off slow but the second half was fast-paced and exciting, with a number of plot turns that I didn't expect.

I loved revisiting the world of the Green Bone Saga in this standalone novella. This urban fantasy story has a strong mystery/thriller element.

Ghostlight | Kenneth Oppel

A nominee for the Aurora (Canadian SFF) award for Best YA novel, this ghost story is set at the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse located on the Toronto islands. The lighthouse is a real landmark in Toronto that indeed has a reputation for being haunted! '

The story is a good one, predictable at times. What I enjoyed most was learning more about Canada's history.

This historical fantasy set in Chicago of the 1920's features demons, angels and a noir-style mystery. I enjoyed it very much and thought it had a lot of depth in its plot and characters for a novella-length book.

Kinew offers great messages in this YA novel about an Indigenous gamer's real life on a reservation and her parallel life in the digital world. However, I found the plot on the weak side.

This novel was nominated for the 2022 Aurora YA award. #auroraawards

The third book in Armstrong's A Royal Guide to Monster Slaying series, this has been nominated for a 2022 Aurora YA award. #auroraawards

It's a bit cutesy for my tastes but I expect that many middle-school readers would enjoy it.
