Once in the Year: A Christmas Story | Elizabeth Yates, Nora Spicer Unwin
post image

Little Christmas, Three Kings‘ Day, Epiphany — whatever you call it, it‘s here and the 12 Days of Christmas have officially ended, so it‘s time to be done for the season.🎄

December is always so full that my Christmas reading spills over into the new year. It can feel a little weird continuing into January, but at this point it‘s become a tradition.🤷🏼‍♀️

I read many new-to-me gems for my #VintageBookishChristmas, so I‘m calling it a success!

I Saw Three Ships | Elizabeth Goudge

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The 12 Days of Christmas aren‘t over yet, so I can keep reading Christmas books, right?! I‘ll take a break soon to share my 5🌟 reads of 2019, promise!

Book 7 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is another beautiful reprint of an older book — and another first title (for me) by an author who I want to read lots more of.📚

Lovely story, lovely illustrations, this is a book that will definitely be kept and re-read.

smilingshelves I have a set of five of her novels, but haven't read any yet. Maybe this is the year! 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves oh I‘m so curious which ones! I have The Little White Horse & Linnets and Valerians on my TBR — also Pilgrims Inn, but I think that‘s one of her adult titles. I know she wrote a lot more! 4y

A Tree for Peter | Kate Seredy

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Book 6 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is A Tree for Peter, by Kate Seredy. My copy itself isn‘t vintage, but rather a reprint published by the wonderful Purple House Press. I‘ve learned of so many interesting older books since discovering the Reshelving Alexandria website, but I somehow stumbled across this one on my own a few months ago and tucked it away for December.

[Continued in comments ⬇️]

BucklingBookshelves I had no idea this book used to be hard-to-find because the reprint is now readily available — which is fantastic because now more people will be able to experience this book!

This one is a short illustrated novel and what a lovely story. It‘s my first by Newbery author Kate Seredy, but definitely won‘t be my last. In fact, I have four more waiting for me on my shelves! I‘d love to read them all for #theunreadshelfproject2020 📚📚📚

A Certain Small Shepherd | Rebecca Caudill

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Book 5 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is A Certain Small Shepherd. It‘s not quite a picture book, but rather a short illustrated story. This is my first by Caudill, but definitely won‘t be my last. It‘s my third book illustrated by DuBois who‘s received both the Newbery Medal AND Caldecott Honors. 🙌🏻 I‘ll grab just about any book with his name on it — and I‘m glad I did here, because I had never heard of this one before a few weeks ago!

Once on Christmas | Dorothy Thompson

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Book 4 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is Once on Christmas, by Dorothy Thompson & illustrated by Lois Lenski. It is a short & simple story of an old-fashioned Christmas as remembered by a minister‘s daughter. I was thinking it was just OK until I got to the part where she receives a book as a Christmas gift and, well, it was delightful and the whole thing came to life for me at that point. A lovely little story I‘m sure I will re-read.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Book 3 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is Turkey for Christmas, by Marguerite de Angeli. I had been on the hunt for this one and could hardly believe my eyes when I spotted it at a $2/bag library sale. Of course I had *just* caved and bought a different edition, so I grabbed this one and sold the extra (this one is prettier!) Such a great book! I look forward to re-reading this one during future Christmas seasons for sure.🎄📚🎄

The Lion in the Box | Marguerite De Angeli

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Book 2 of my #VintageBookishChristmas is The Lion in the Box, by Marguerite de Angeli. It‘s out of print, my library doesn‘t have it, and it can be really hard to find in good condition at a reasonable price, but I finally did this year! So I knew it had to move to the top of my holiday TBR list.

I really enjoyed it and it‘s only reinforced my desire to read lots more of her books. Luckily they are not ALL out of print!🎄📚🎄

smilingshelves This author was from a city about half an hour from me! I know there's an exhibit about her in the public library but I haven't had a chance to visit it yet. The only one I've read by her is The Door in the Wall, but I should start reading others! They look delightful! 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves oh how cool! I didn‘t realize it was that close to you! I‘ve been enjoying her books so far — I hope you can find some! I actually have an illustrated biography about her I haven‘t read yet called Michigan's Marguerite De Angeli: The Story of Lapeer's Native Author/Illustrator

smilingshelves That book needs some love on Goodreads! I'll have to track down a copy to read, too. 😊 4y

The letter on the tree | Natalie Savage Carlson

Pickpick

🌟🌟🌟🌟 The Family Under the Bridge is one of my favorite Christmas chapter books and I actually only read it for the first time a couple years ago. Since I‘ve gotten into a bit of a vintage book obsession in recent months, I decided to try another older Christmas book by Natalie Savage Carlson this year. I still like the other one better, but I really enjoyed this one, too. I‘m calling this book 1 of my #VintageBookishChristmas. More to come!🎄

smilingshelves Ooh, I love the idea of vintage book Christmas! 4y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘ll have to see how many I get to. I have a stack of shorter ones similar to this and I usually read Christmassy things through the end of the year. It‘s been fun so far though! 🎄📚🎄 4y
