After reading the next 10 chapters, through chapter 18, my feelings for Betty and Andy have not changed. They are two bullies conspiring against the good people of Wolf Hollow. Not that Annabelle planned it, but I believe changing Toby's appearance will help him in the chapters to come. #NewberyHonor2017

DrSpalding In chapter 16, they discuss lava soap. My father after the Air Force, was an aircraft mechanic. He maintained corporate jets for Darden restaurants. I vividly remember him using lava soap to remove the grease and oil acquired in a days work. #TextToSelfConnection 7y

CherylVDM I find Betty appalling. She seems so calculating. I wonder what power she has over Andy - is it just a crush? I want to know what happened to her father and I'm wondering why Toby chose Wolf Hollow as the place where he would settle. Do you think he has family there? 7y

DrSpalding I think Betty and Andy are birds of a feather. Interesting thought that Toby is in Wolf Hollow for a reason. I never thought about that. 7y

LForsythe @DrSpalding @CherylVDM Any ideas where Betty is? Annabelle seems to have an idea where she might be-- I feel like I might have missed a clue from the author regarding location. I think she is hiding, not hurt. 7y

KarriW @LForsythe I remember that Annabelle heard something like a porcupine before she found Toby in the smokehouse. It bothered me that she left that as a loose end. I think that is what Annabelle is remembering in ch. 18 7y

Eight chapters in and I feel like we are just at the beginnings of where the book will take us in history. I find myself hopeful that the relationship between Toby and Annabelle will continue to develop. When Annabelle was walking alone I kept reminding myself that Toby was likely nearby. I am drawn to Toby's mysterious ways, and grateful that he witnessed Betty's cruelty. I suppose I am rooting for their unique friendship. #NewberyHonor2017

DrSpalding I agree. Toby is definitely mysterious. I am also intrigued by the photography. Had me wishing that there were historical pictures that we could see. 7y

Betty's behaviors are disturbing but believable. I am looking forward to learning how this plot will unfold. Somehow I don't think there will be a simple solution. Can Betty change? I think Annabelle will become stronger, but I suspect events will become darker before the resolution of the story. I'm curious about others' thoughts about age level for book. At this point (still early), I'm thinking 5th-6th grades as youngest. #Newberyhonor2017

DrSpalding I too am disturbed by Betty the bully. I hope she can change. Stopping at Chapter 8 was a great spot. Changes are surely on the horizon. 7y

Wolf Hollow | Lauren Wolk

After first 8 chapters: I was worried at beginning that I wouldn't want to read this book. Even with some disturbing events, I am hooked. I am intrigued by the characters and engaged in the plot. While I enjoyed the fantasy of "The Girl who Drank the Moon" because of imagining the possibilities of characters and events, I feel more engaged in "Wolf Hollow", because of probability of characters and events. #Newberyhonor2017

DrSpalding I agree! I thoroughly enjoy historical fiction and reading this makes me think of Little House on the Prairie. Ms. Taylor has a diverse one room schoolhouse class. It's very interesting. I'm wondering about Toby and his role in what will occur. 7y

CherylVDM The first 8 chapters are uncomfortable to say the least. I have know people like Betty and know the damage they can cause. I'm guessing that eventually we will learn why she is the way she is. I'm not sure I'll ever have compassion for her. 7y
