Mehso-so

"All of us are given gifts. How we use them is up to us." -Isaiah the Mouse ? Read how Isaiah manages to escape a lab, avoid death by hairless cat, rats, hawk, and mousetrap while forming new relationships. All the while, Isaiah discovers his own strengths, talents, and bravery. Overall, a quick, cute read meant to leave any reader wanting more. I felt it fell a little flat with depth... esp compared to other Patterson novels.

Well-written and intriguing story that will have you on the edge of your seat hopeful for good to overcome evil. I felt frustrated and wanted a bit more than what the ending offered!

DrSpalding Agreed! Harsh ending! 7y

I had a hard time getting hooked at the beginning of the book, but now at midpoint am enjoying the story. I am eager (and worried) to learn more about Grandma Lilah's health and how Lucy and Nate may help her see the loons. I love how the Baileys, esp Nate, have made the move easier for Lucy! I think we are about to learn more about Megan. #UCFprofLC

CherylVDM I had a hard time at the beginning as well. I am enjoying the friendship that is growing between Lucy and Nate. I'm a bit worried about how Grandma's health will impact the whole community. 7y
DrSpalding I agree with both comments @LForsythe and @CherylVDM I was hoping the bully character wasn't going to be in this book! I was not happy when she deleted Lucy's loon photos! 7y
LForsythe Right?!?! I think we are all a little scarred from Betty's behavior in Wolf Hollow. Hopefully Megan will be different! @CherylVDM @DrSpalding 7y

Eight chapters in and I feel like we are just at the beginnings of where the book will take us in history. I find myself hopeful that the relationship between Toby and Annabelle will continue to develop. When Annabelle was walking alone I kept reminding myself that Toby was likely nearby. I am drawn to Toby's mysterious ways, and grateful that he witnessed Betty's cruelty. I suppose I am rooting for their unique friendship. #NewberyHonor2017

DrSpalding I agree. Toby is definitely mysterious. I am also intrigued by the photography. Had me wishing that there were historical pictures that we could see. 7y
Ehoffman Intriguing story! I think it would certainly captured the attention of fifth graders! Great historical fiction pick! Loving it so far! 😊 7y

Pickpick

Creatively written in letters to her new teacher, Kizzy Anne tells her experience about integrating to a white school, while coming to terms with her own self-doubt she finds confidence and friendships with the help of her dog, Shag. I appreciated the details that allowed the reader to better understand this time in history, as well as the positive role of the teacher throughout the book. Highly recommend!

DrSpalding Oh, this looks so good! If I am correct, it was an SSYRA book a couple of years ago. 7y
LForsythe @DrSpalding Yes, it was-- that's what made me want to read it! Always on the hunt for good historical fiction! 7y
DrSpalding Me too! Thanks! 7y

Find myself lost in the beauty of these words!

Ch. 3- "when they died of old age, they died rich."
(Referring to the Star Children).

Ch. 5- "They were a mutual admiration society of 2." (Xan & Luna)
"Their growing up is as swift as the beat of a hummingbird's wings." (Xan to Glerk on Luna's babyhood)

Ch. 11- "Death is always sudden." (Glerk) ..."and I am ever so curious to know what comes next." (Xan)

#Newbery2017

anakenn The grow my up so swift quote really resonated with me. Empty nesting is for the birds. :) 7y
