This is one of the very few dictionaries for the Irish Language I‘ve found. It‘s meant for kids but isn‘t bad for adults. It has a great section in the back that explains the basics of Irish grammar without being overwhelming, that is so helpful to someone trying to learn Irish. These might not be the most useful 500 words, but they certainly are words of interest to kids and are probably useful for educators as well.

AkashaVampie I'm Irish on both sides (mother and father) so I feel a great connection with Irish things. Someday 🤞🤞🤞 I hope to go to Ireland. I might have to check this book out 5y
GingerAntics @AkashaVampie I‘m hoping to find one day, too. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 I‘ve got Irish on both sides as well. 5y
GingerAntics @AkashaVampie I think I‘d suggest a phrase book or even Pimsleur Irish. Those are going to be far more useful. Unless you‘re planning to visit a zoo while in Ireland, there isn‘t going to be a lot of use for the contents of this particular book for a tourist in Ireland. 5y

I‘m always looking for ways to learn new Irish words (which is harder than you‘d think, oddly enough), and I stumbled upon this little gem yesterday (then promptly found the French version, too). I can‘t wait to learn my next 500 Irish words.

Chrissyreadit I‘ve always wanted to learn Irish Gaelic. 6y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit so have I. Duolingo got it two years ago maybe. It‘s helpful for vocab but horrible for pronunciation because most things have no audio files attached and there is no speech option. I just discovered Pimsleur and I‘ve learned a bunch of pronunciation, but it‘s a smaller dialect so some people don‘t like it. It‘s a good starting point for pronunciation and the only word I‘ve heard is different in other dialects is the words for Irish 6y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit (the language, not the people). I‘ve heard from actual Irish speakers, any other Irish speaker would understand you either way. I sometimes feel like I‘m speaking in tongues the first time I listen to a lesson. 🤣 Now I have this book just to help me build the words I can recognise in writing. I‘ll worry about pronunciation later. I‘m also thinking of trying to learn the lists of words in 6y
Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics I had several friends who spoke fluent Irish. I loved listening to them. My friends mom in HS always had an Irish radio station on at their house. I loved it. 6y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I LOVE how Irish sounds. It‘s so musical and poetic. I‘m determined to learn this language and actually be able to use it. 6y
