Pickpick

This book is wonderfully philosophical. It gets you thinking. The writing style, with all the different moments of the story jumbled together is really playful and imaginative. It‘s a heavy topic - war, death, life - but Vonnegut manages to do it in a playful way. I highly recommend this book to both Vonnegut fans and soon-to-be Vonnegut fans.

Faibka So happy you liked it, yes it has so many layers to it and I loved V‘s writing style. We should try to read another one 😉 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka I‘m game for that. I‘ve got several of his other novels on my Apple Books Wishlist. There is another one with Mr. Rosewater. It‘s hard to figure out where to go from S5. 5y
Faibka True! By the way that‘s a beautiful edition 😍 I need to get my hands on one :) I think I physically have Cat‘s Cradle, Player Piano and The Sirens of Titan. Which one is the one with Mr. Rosewater? 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka it‘s called God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. 5y

And so is this book...over out of nowhere, rather unexpectedly but not unpleasantly.

I rather liked Derby as a character. I‘m really glad Vonnegut didn‘t focus on his execution. It got mentioned and we moved on. The detail was saved for other things. All the deaths were really mentioned in passing, followed with “so it goes” and we all moved on.
@Faibka this bit stood out to me as well

Faibka Yes, I loved this quote because it is so true and yet in the character of Derby he presents the hopeful example that there will still be those who refuse to just be part of the background, even at the cost of their own lives. A powerful statement 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka I totally agree with that assessment. I rather liked how human Derby was. I think everyone can relate to some part of him, but then that‘s true of most of Vonnegut‘s characters. 5y

This is remarkably poignant. Sadly, 50 years after it was written, it is still true.

Well, that‘s depressing. No way to change things, huh? No way to change fate? Evangelical Christians will be heartbroken that their wealth isn‘t the result of moral superiority then. The poor dears.

Oh how the world would be different if this was actually in the bible.

Faibka I found this part worthy of some thought as well 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka I really enjoyed his commentary on faith and religion. It would certainly be interesting to see Vonnegut‘s response to all the “thoughts and prayers.” 5y
Faibka @GingerAntics yes, I would love to know his feedback on that! 5y

GingerAntics @Faibka I get the impression that he would have a very creative and wonderful response to all of that BS. (edited) 5y
Faibka @GingerAntics with all that‘s going on right now, he would‘ve had enough material for at least another 20 novels, lol. 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka they would have been great, too!!! 5y

Faibka This actually surprised me as I had never thought about it in that way, but yeah. How many unworthy people are currently in power only because they‘re rich and well connected? 5y
GingerAntics @Faibka right? I don‘t understand when or why we started conflating money and power with intelligence and worthiness. 5y
