Rules and Advice for LibraryThing Secret Santa

Who can do this?

Anyone from anywhere can do this.

What do I agree to?

You agree that you're doing this for fun. By signing up you agree to take what comes and to be pleasant about it. This is about the giving. Things might go wrong. Unless LibraryThing employees run off to Mexico with your money, you don't have a case against us.

How does this work?

  1. You can make yourself the recipient or someone else. You can enter as many times as you like!
  2. On Monday, November 27 at 12pm Eastern (18:00 GMT), LibraryThing will stop allowing people to sign up for the SantaThing program.
  3. Shortly afterwards, we will tell you who you are matched up with by sending a profile comment. If you entered multiple times, for yourself or others, you will also need to pick for multiple members.
  4. The gifts you pick cannot exceed the total chosen by your Santee. No single item can cost less than $2.50.
  5. You will have until Monday, December 4 at 12pm EST (18:00 GMT), to decide what you want to give. We will give you a web form to fill out, with a space for a message.
  6. LibraryThing elves will order everything from the bookseller you choose. $6.00 USD is deducted for shipping for most stores. If anything is left over, we get that money.

Give me some legal prose!

By clicking the acceptance checkbox, you agree to be bound by these rules and conditions—which shall be final—and to waive any right to claim ambiguity in these rules and conditions. Any dispute arising from participation in SantaThing will be determined according to the laws of nowhere, because you've agreed to waive legal rights and shouldn't even think of suing us, but if that's not good enough, by the laws of Maine, and the entrants consent to its jurisdiction over them and agree that its courts have exclusive jurisdiction over all such disputes. This program is void where prohibited by law.

Employees of LibraryThing and its affiliated companies, and members of those employees' immediate families, ARE eligible to both give and receive presents.

The entrants release, discharge, and hold harmless LibraryThing, LibraryThing's employees, subsidiaries, assigns, attorneys, lackeys, representatives and agents from any and all liability or damages arising from the administration of this light-hearted and entirely fun program, and the use or misuse of any book received, including, without limitation, the following: late, lost, incomplete, delayed, misdirected, poorly written or unintelligible books, and any printing, typographical, administrative or technological errors in any materials associated with this program. LibraryThing and its partners assume no responsibility for defective books or books damaged, stolen or lost in transit.

SantaThing assignments and gifts are non-negotiable. The recipient is responsible for all federal, state and local taxes arising from the receipt of a gift.

LibraryThing reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, cancel or suspend this program entirely, for a full refund of any amounts paid. LibraryThing may prohibit you from participating in SantaThing or if, in its sole discretion, it determines that you are attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of SantaThing for any reason whatsoever, and particularly including abusing other entrants or the representatives of LibraryThing, or otherwise violating any of these rules or LibraryThing's Terms and Conditions.

To receive a copy of these Rules and Conditions, print them out, put them in a self-addressed stamped envelope and mail them to yourself, or to a friend willing to take part in such madness.
