The Keeper
The Keeper | Sarah Langan
1 post | 5 read | 9 to read
Some believe Bedford, Maine, is cursed. Its bloody past, endless rain, and the decay of its downtown portend a hopeless future. With the death of its paper mill, Bedford's unemployed residents soon find themselves with far too much time to dwell on thoughts of Susan Marley. Once the local beauty, she's now the local whore. Silently prowling the muddy streets, she watches eerily from the shadows, waiting for . . . something. And haunting the sleep of everyone in town with monstrous visions of violence and horror. Those who are able will leave Bedford before the darkness fully ascends. But those who are trapped herefrom Susan Marley's long-suffering mother and younger sister to her guilt-ridden, alcoholic ex-lover to the destitute and faithless with nowhere else to gowill soon know the fullest and most terrible meaning of nightmare.

Pickpick

Susan Marley is the boogie woman of Bedford, Maine. She hasn‘t spoken in years but she creeps everyone out as she walks by them, knowing that they‘ve all been having nightmares of her. Add to Susan, the paper mill closing it‘s doors for good, this struggling town heads for a reckoning. I really like Sarah Langan. She writes regret and small town people really well. This is the first book in a duology. The Missing is the 2nd book, which I loved.

BookishTrish This looks good! 6y
Reggie @BookishTrish it was, but I liked The Missing better. Both are good as stand alones. The Missing also won the Bram Stoker award for best novel that year. 6y

Bookzombie I have read this one. I guess I‘m going to have to buy The Missing now that you say it‘s better. 🙂It‘s been on my to buy list for a long time since the library doesn‘t have it. (edited) 6y
Reggie @Bookzombie The Missing is soooo good. Also, I think Sarah is a very Stephen Kingsian writer. Small town people in small town Maine with lives that are hard, compounded by external supernatural forces. I hope you like it. Did you like The Keeper? 6y
Bookzombie @Reggie I did like The Keeper a lot. I don‘t know why I haven‘t bought The Missing on my Kindle. I always looked for it at Half-Price. While I haven‘t read all of King‘s books, I agree about the similarity. 6y
Bookzombie @Reggie Have you read Audrey‘s Door? It was one I really liked too. (edited) 6y
Reggie @Bookzombie I haven‘t. She only has 3 novels and that would make her last for me so I‘m gonna save it until next year. 6y
