The Blue Notebook
The Blue Notebook: A Novel | James A. Levine
5 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
BONUS: This edition contains a The Blue Notebook discussion guide and an excerpt from James A. Levine's Bingo's Run. An unforgettable, deeply affecting debut novel, The Blue Notebook tells the story of Batuk, a precocious fifteen-year-old girl from rural India who is sold into sexual slavery by her father. As she navigates the grim realities of Mumbai’s Common Street, Batuk manages to put pen to paper, recording her private thoughts and writing fantastic tales that help her transcend her daily existence. Beautifully crafted, surprisingly hopeful, and filled with both tragedy and humor, The Blue Notebook shows how even in the most difficult situations, people use storytelling to make sense of and give meaning to their lives.

Day 11: The Blue Notebook by James Levine; not a book everyone will be able to read, but a powerful story about child trafficking in India written by a physician & based on his personal research

Starting this book today. Allegedly, it's based on India and talks about a rather grim topic.

Per my last post, I also missed yesterday's #Riotgrams prompt for #Notebooks / #Journals. Here is my newly christened reading notebook. Both the book and pens were an end of year present from one of my students who will be moving to a different school next year. Warmed my heart to get such a thoughtful gift. Stay tuned for today's prompt later in the day!

Read this book as an ARC before it was published in 2009. It was my first glimpse in to the world of child trafficking and prostitution. I was shocked and appalled at the lives of these kids and the conditions they were forced to live in. Such a tragic world, and such a heartbreaking book. It filled me with rage and helplessness.

This post was for today's #nrbchallenge prompt - A book that made you angry. Seinfeld reference - "Serenity Now!"
