Lady Darling Inquires After a Killer | Colleen Gleason
The Dowager Marchioness of Darling is a woman of a certain age. She has reached the point in life where she has no responsibilities or restrictions. Her children are married off-and quite well, thanks to her skill at matchmaking-and her beloved husband has been gone for over ten years, leaving their son as the new marquess. Lady Darling wants nothing more than to avoid Society and return to her country house where she can putter in the garden, adore her menagerie of pets, and read the latest romantic and mystery novels by the likes of Mr. Conan Doyle and Mr. Collins. Unfortunately, her plans are overset when an old friend implores her to sponsor her daughter into society. Lady Darling agrees to assist. After all, finding husbands for debutantes is one of many things at which she is accomplished. Everything is moving along swimmingly until Lady Darling and Miss Bedwith, her charge, attend a dinner party where a man is found murdered. Of course Lady Darling-who has a cool head and an air of efficiency about her-takes charge of the scene. She notices details of the sort that Mr. Holmes, the famous detective, might use to deduce the killer, and before she knows it, Lady Darling has plunged herself into inquiring after who would have wanted to kill Harold Tripley. As she moves between the glitter of society balls and the back streets of London-a place no proper woman should venture-Lady Darling finds herself quite enjoying this new, improper adventure. That is, until the killer sets his sights on her.
