Spent: A Comic Novel | Alison Bechdel

The celebrated and beloved New York Times bestselling author of the modern classic Fun Home presents a laugh-out-loud, brilliant, and passionately political work of autofiction."Truthful, rueful and delightful."--LA TimesIn Alison Bechdel's hilariously skewering and gloriously cast new comic novel confection, a cartoonist named Alison Bechdel, running a pygmy goat sanctuary in Vermont, is existentially irked by a climate-challenged world and a citizenry on the brink of civil war. She wonders: Can she pull humanity out of its death spiral by writing a scathingly self-critical memoir about her own greed and privilege?Meanwhile, Alison's first graphic memoir about growing up with her father, a taxidermist who specialized in replicas of Victorian animal displays, has been adapted into a highly successful TV series. It's a phenomenon that makes Alison, formerly on the cultural margins, the envy of her friend group (recognizable as characters, now middle-aged and living communally in Vermont, from Bechdel's beloved comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For).As the TV show Death and Taxidermy racks up Emmy after Emmy--and when Alison's Pauline Bunyanesque partner Holly posts an instructional wood-chopping video that goes viral--Alison's own envy spirals. Why couldn't she be the writer for a critically lauded and wildly popular reality TV show...like Queer Eye...showing people how to free themselves from consumer capitalism and live a more ethical life?!!Spent's rollicking and masterful denouement--making the case for seizing what's true about life in the world at this moment, before it's too late--once again proves that "nobody does it better" (New York Times Book Review) than the real Alison Bechdel.

A delightful work of autofiction! I read an interview with Bechdel where she said her original idea for this book was a straightforward memoir about her relationship with money but that she decided a graphic novel about her trying to write that book was more fun. Indeed! I love how she skewers and adores leftist communities and the inclusion of the cast of the Dykes to Watch Out comics. Also: Bisexual polyamory! Trans activist work! Goat farming!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I'm honestly not sure if this book would work if you aren't already familiar with the characters from DTWOF. I'd recommend first reading 4d
Clare-Dragonfly I have both on hold, but DTWOF scheduled first! 4d
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Clare-Dragonfly ooh enjoy! I wish i could go back and read the comics for the first time. I have such fondness for the characters. 4d

Finished this “comic novel” on our way home from a Red‘s baseball game. It was fantastic! Hilarious! I mistakenly assumed this was a memoir/nonfiction. After figuring out its auto-fiction, I was able to just take in the hilarity of the goat sanctuary, middle-aged throuple, vegan podcasters, co-op, a MAGA sister, and so much more. Liberals will recognize themselves in these pages, I sure did. I‘d watch this tv show.

Alison Bechdel and Harry Bliss, both Vermont cartoonists, interview each other in our local independent newspaper.

"and she knows that whatever happens in those coming days, she will get by with a little help from her annoying, tenderhearted, and utterly luminous friends."
This is SO good!! It had me cracking up throughout. It is going to hit hard with the hippy liberal/progressive crowd that can laugh at themselves and their friends. I loved all the animals and all the relationships. I might have to go buy myself a copy to own and reread!

ChaoticMissAdventures @Suet624 she is a genius! This one is for me one of her funnest. Filled with goats, and cats, and kids, and very much poking fun at the left but in a lovely Bechdel way. 2w
Suet624 She made the rare appearance at the No Kings protest in Burlington and spoke at the rally. Happy to see she stepped up like that. 2w

Okay I'm currently reading five (!) other books right now, but I just can't help myself because my hold for the new Alison Bechdel book came!! I heard this one features her characters from her original comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. (I finally signed up for a free trial at Audible so I could listen to the audiobook adaptation of DTWOF and revisit the characters). It is really incredible, but especially Roberta Colindrez as Lois. *swoon*

This was great! There‘s a lot going on - the pandemic, social media influencing, communal living, a MAGA sister, sometimes spicy polyamory, many goats, generational differences re: social justice work, kooky TV adaptations, critiques of capitalism, and plenty of hilarious hijinks. And of course Alison Bechdel makes it all work with her brilliant writing and drawing.
