The Light Between Oceans meets The Snow Child in this novel set in a Scottish village in the weeks after a young boy mysteriously washes up on shore, causing the buried secrets of the insular community to come to light and rekindling an old love story. Its 1900 and Skerry, a small Scottish fishing village, is destined for an unyielding winter. During a storm, a young boy washes up on the shore. He bears an uncanny resemblance to teacher Dorothys son, lost to the sea at the same age many years before, his body never found. The village is soon snowed in, and Dorothy agrees to look after the child until they can uncover the mystery of his origins. But over time, the lines between reality and desperate hope start to blur as the boy reminds Dorothy more and more of her own lost child. The boys arrival also finally forces Dorothy to face the truth about her brief but passionate love affair with Joseph, the fisherman who found the boy on the shore and who has been the subject of whispers connecting him to the drowning of Dorothys son years earlier. As the past rises to meet the present, long-buried secrets are unearthed within this tight-knit community, and the childs arrival becomes a catalyst for something far greater than any of them could imagine.

A slower paced book set in a Scottish village about a woman who lost a son and has to deal with those emotions when a young boy washes up in a storm years later. While it was a slower paced book it still held a good pace to it and was an enjoyable read. The book makes you feel like you are in a 1900 coastal village. It is character driven and the main character became a bit annoying but after reading the ending it all comes together beautifully.

Went to a book fair marketed as an adult scholastic book fair this afternoon. It was cute. Small. But cute. Loving my Richard Scarry bookmark! These are my purchases: (The Fisherman‘s book is actually an ARC but was $5 so I let it slide. Really the quality of the ARC was quite similar to my full-price purchase of the Nat Cassidy book. Things that make me go 🤔)

#FridayNightReadingHour with my favourite snack - baguette, cheese and green olives. Also borrowing my kids Jurassic blanket for this reading session. My drink is on the nightstand 🤦‍♀️.

Hoping to finish this book soon...I've enjoyed it so far just haven't had much time for reading.

Our eldest is at his last day of summer camp and our youngest decided that she'd like to spend the morning at the park before we go swimming this afternoon. So we picked up a lemonade for her and a dragonfruit drink for myself. Going to start the tagged book that I picked up from the library. Another book I know nothing about...I've read some great books this year by picking books I know nothing about so hopefully this is a good book too!

uncommonlycozies Love random library gems! I picked up Anima Rising randomly & now I have a few of Christopher Moore‘s books stacked. 📚 what‘s been your favorite library find this year? 3mo
Jess861 @uncommonlycozies That is a hard question - there have been a few! I'll probably have to go with The Island of Missing Trees though. Advocate and West with Giraffes are a close second though! 3mo

This was an unusual story. While I really enjoyed it for the most part I also found parts to be tedious. I didn‘t connect with any of the characters and to me it‘s important to do that. Overall though it was an ok book.

This is a heartbreaking story. But filled with so much heart and hope.

This is described as “The Light Between Oceans meets The Snow Child “ and that is a perfect description of the overall feel of this poignant book. Set in a small Scottish fishing village in the early 1900s, it is a story of hardship, secrets, grief, guilt and love. I enjoyed both the characters and the setting but especially the depiction of how secrets & misunderstandings can destroy lives. Thank to Edelweiss+ for the digital ARC. 4/5 stars
