The Bane Witch
The Bane Witch: A Novel | Ava Morgyn
3 posts | 3 read | 13 to read
Practical Magic meets Gone Girl in Ava Morgyn's next dark, spellbinding novel about a woman who is more than a witch - she's a hunter. Piers Corbin has always had an affinity for poisonous things - plants and men. From the pokeweed berries she consumed at age five that led to the accidental death of a stranger, to the husband whose dark proclivities have become... concerning, poison has been at the heart of her story. But when she fakes her own death in an attempt to escape her volatile marriage and goes to stay with her estranged great aunt in the mountains, she realizes her predilection is more than a hunger - its a birthright. Piers comes from a long line of poison eaters - Bane Witches women who ingest deadly plants and use their magic to rid the world of evil men. Piers sets out to earn her place in her familys gritty but distinguished legacy, all while working at her Aunt Myrtles cafe and perpetuating a flirtation with the local, well-meaning sheriff to allay his suspicions on the body count shes been leaving in her wake. But soon she catches the attention of someone else, a serial killer operating in the area. And that only means one thing - its time to feed. In Ava Morgyns dark, thrilling novel, The Bane Witch, a very little poison can do a world of good.

Centers around a line of witches biologically driven to enact a unique brand of vigilante justice upon the worst kinds of men. Which was a premise (mostly) intriguing enough to outweigh the flaws in execution.

(& due to illness knocking me out of commission for almost all of October, this was only book 2 for me for #hauntedshelf. Only 850 points for the month. Obviously must bolster my immune system ahead of next year!)

I nominated this book for #CampLitsy25 but I‘m actually really glad it wasn‘t picked and I got to read it in Fall.

It starts with a woman faking her death to escape her abusive husband and then goes full throttle into serial killers, feminism, the supernatural, and family ties. I don‘t want to give too much away but I just loved it.

December‘s #doublespin is this ARC that publishes 3/18/2025. It‘s one of the best books I‘ve read all year. An edge-of-your-seat thriller with a supernatural twist, it grabbed me from the first page and did not let go. Go in blind, and let the writing sweep you away.

TheAromaofBooks Great review!! I quite like the cover as well! 11mo
