Billy No-Mates
Billy No-Mates: How I Realised Men Have a Friendship Problem | Max Dickins
1 post | 2 to read
Where have all my friends gone? When Max Dickins decided to propose to his girlfriend, he realised there was no one he could call on to be his best man. He quickly learned that he wasnt the only man struggling with friendships. For decades, countless studies from across the world have confirmed that men have fewer close friends than women and the problem gets worse the older men get. But what goes wrong? And what can men do about it? Dickins is going to find out. Join Max on his funny and charmingly candid search as he takes a defibrillator to his social life. As he ultimately discovers that if he wants a Best Man, then he needs to be a better man.

Three books for my shelves (though at the moment that actually means somewhere on the floor):
I've wanted the Narnia one for a while: the author posits that each book in the series explores the characteristics ascribed to each planet in mediaeval Europe.
"Billy No-Mates" explores male loneliness which, given the suicide 'epidemic' amongst men between 25-50, could be dour but it's apparently both poignant and funny.

Bookwomble "Basilisks and Beowulf" examines the Anglo-Saxon 'obsession' with monsters.
I ordered "Black British History: New Perspectives" from the library after reading editor Hakim Adi's brilliant compilation of historical writings, "Black Voices on Britain". I think this is a book better sitting on public shelves than on mine.

vivastory I know I have mentioned Backlisted a few times on your posts, one of my fave episodes that they ever did was their Beowulf episode where each member talked about the translation of Beowulf that they read. 9mo
rwmg Some fascinating titles there 9mo

Bookwomble @vivastory Yes, Scott, you have mentioned Backlisted over and over and over again! So, I've finally listened to an episode - Beowulf, obviously - and I'm glad you kept reminding me about it, as it was great 😃👍 I've now got to listen to Bruce Springsteen's Darkness at the Edge of Town with different ears. Hwaet! 9mo
Bookwomble @rwmg I thought so, too 😁 I do wish they'd stop publishing fascinating titles, at least for a while, so that I'd have chance to actually read some of them! 9mo
Bookwomble @vivastory Scott, I re-read my reply to your comment and it reads to me now as sarcastic, but that was far from my intent, and I hope I didn't offend you. My "over and over and over again" was meant to be directed at my forgetfulness, and I was appreciative of your kind reminders ? 4mo
vivastory @Bookwomble No offense was taken! 😉 4mo
Bookwomble @vivastory Oh, good! That's a relief 😊 4mo
