so-so
After founding The North Face then Esprit, Doug Tompkins cashed in and went to Chile to dedicate his time to protecting the wilderness. I should have loved this—someone eschewing society to protect the natural world, but it felt too much like an extremely wealthy person throwing their money around for their own ends. Plus he flew everywhere in a small plane while protesting extractive industry. 🤷🏼♀️

iread2much It sounds like a rich dude who wants lots of praise for his “sacrifice” and ignores all the ways he could have empowered others… 9mo
Hooked_on_books @iread2much To a degree, yes. He was instrumental in creating a number of national parks in Chile, which is fantastic, but he just threw money at everything, seemed to bulldoze people, and failed to recognize his own complicity in use of fossil fuels. He was also careless in a way that led to his death. Really, it was a hard book to pay attention to. 9mo
