NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE 2023 CALDECOTT MEDAL This glowing and playful picture book features an overheatedand overwhelmedpup who finds his calm with some sea, sand, and fresh air. Destined to become a classic! NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post Publishers Weekly Kirkus Reviews New York Public Library An utter joy from beginning to end! Sophie Blackall, two-time Caldecott Medal winner This hot dog has had enough of summer in the city! Enough of sizzling sidewalks, enough of wailing sirens, enough of people's feet right in his face. When he plops down in the middle of a crosswalk, his owner endeavors to get him the breath of fresh air he needs. She hails a taxi, hops a train, and ferries out to the beach. Here, a pup can run! With fluid art and lyrical text that have the soothing effect of waves on sand, award-winning author Doug Salati shows us how to find calm and carry it back with us so we can appreciate the small joys in a day.

Published in 2023, the book follows a dog that roams around the busy city waiting for the chance to run. Once he finally is at the beach, the dog can finally be a dog. The words are short but descriptive to make it feel like the reader is in the city. The pictures are busy to display the city environment. My favorite quote is when the dog says they will have sweet, ocean dreams to show his appreciation for the different places he travels to.

I thought this was such a cute summer story about a dog and its owner with what it looks like living in New York City

blurb
Rachel044420

The dog was simply too hot and the owner tried many different ways of transportation to get the dog away. They ended up at the beach. The dog and the owner had a great day together.

This book could be used when teaching about narration and perspective because it is told through the dogs perspective.

Caldecott - The illustrations of this book are great. I love that the illustrator changes perspectives in the images (close up, far away, down low and up high). I also love this book because I personally love Dachshunds.

This is a fun, feel-good story about a dog in the city who is hot, tired, and overstimulated by everything going on around him. He goes on an adventure to the beach and plays in the sand to cool off. When he returns to the city he is joyful and comfortable again. The theme of this story is taking a break to calm down when you are overwhelmed or need some fresh air.

I‘m going to be a star!” This line reflects the hot dog's aspiration and excitement about its dream, embodying the theme of pursuing one's goals and embarking on a new adventure.

This would be a really good book when learning about different places. (Cities versus the open beaches.) You could also do a beginning, middle, end writing activity on where the dog travels!

This book is so fun with child like imagery! I really enjoyed how the book took you trough an adventure and two different atmospheres with the city and the beach. It really explained how both were lovely in there own special way!

This book includes a lot of rhyming words so this would work well in a classroom to have students identifying rhyming words and build vocabulary!

A cute and funny little story of a dachshund who wants to spend his summer out on the beach instead of the crowded city. The pictures throughout the book are also so beautifully illustrated, especially the last page with the dog and seals!

I would link this book to teaching by having the students analyze the pictures and explain in their own words how the dog might feel in those situations. This can promote social emotional learning while showing comprehension of the book.

Week 1: Caldecott Winner! This book was cute but didn‘t provide many educational views. May be good for beginning reader with the short sentences and often rhyming word. Not much of the story to the book, but it does dive into how the dog feels. Published May 24, 2022.

I think this book is a great pick for young readers and can be read out loud by an adult or independently by a child. This is a good book for preschool and kindergarten because of the large images and simple language use.

I think this book would be good as a lesson to children about removing themselves from a situation that can cause them to become overwhelmed, Although its not always possible to go the beach there are ways to find a place that helps find each persons calm

This book displayed how we can often times become overwhelmed with life, but shows us that when this happens, we have outlets we can go to (in the dog's case the ocean) in order to reclaim our thoughts and decompress. The book teaches an important message to children about how helpful these outlets can be.

Published in 2022, receiving the Caldecott award. This book tells the story of a dog who lived in bustling NYC. One day when running errands with its owner, the dog became overwhelmed with the heat and the commotion of the city. Refusing to move any further, the owner scooped up the dog and took him to an island where it was much calmer. They returned home that night to find the city calming down, as were they after a very exciting day.

This would be a good book to read in a classroom near the end of the school year when students are feeling overwhelmed and do not want to continue to do work. Just like the dog, the students can push through to get to the best part of the year (or for the dog, the day, being on the boat).
