The New Mother
The New Mother: A Novel | Nora Murphy
8 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
From Nora Murphy, author of The Favor, The New Mother is both relatable and nerve-wracking, sympathetic and bone-chilling— a fresh new twist on motherhood and murder in suburbia. Isolated. Lonely. Tired. It's hard being The New Mother. Sometimes it's murder. Nothing is simple about being a new mom alone in a new house, especially when your baby is collicky. Natalie Fanning loves her son unconditionally, but being a mother was not all she wanted to be. Enter Paul, the neighbor. Paul provides the lifeline she needs in what feels like the most desperate of times. When Paul is helping with Oliver, calmed by his reassuring, steady presence, Nat feels like she can finally rest. But Paul wants something in return. It’s no coincidence that he has befriended Nat—she is the perfect pawn for his own plan. Will Nat wake up in time to see it?

A new house, a coveted neighborhood, a new baby… what more could you ask for?

Natalie wished she could handle motherhood. Her son would not sleep or stop screaming.

A seemingly helpful neighbor made her feel better, but he had a dangerous, ulterior motive.

What was his plan?

Find out what happens in this slow burn that grows in intensity. 5/5

Having been a new mother many many years ago, this book brought back many memories of those tired and sleepless nights in a new neighborhood for me. But , this book takes on many twists and turns and is a psychological thriller that will keep you on your toes and turning the pages into the wee hours of the night! The author does a great job of incorporating the subject of post-partum depression and psychosis into the book.

I‘m not sure I would give this thriller away at any baby showers, but Murphy certainly hooks in the reader from the very start, covering the first three months of Oliver‘s life mostly from the titular character‘s perspective. But the friendly neighbor plays a large role here, too— & as tension mounts, it gets harder and harder to set it down! Murphy captures the sheer exhaustion and overwhelming emotions of her characters well! A satisfying read!

Heartbreaking story about motherhood (it‘s challenges, it‘s wonder…and jealousy)! Natalie has a difficult time after giving birth to Oliver but neighbor Paul, a stay-at-home dad befriends her…and things go terribly wrong! Raced through this one as it‘s intense!
