The first book to come up at the library for me off the Booker longlist. What a quirky read. It definitely got slow in the middle, but I was hooked at the beginning and by the time things started to come together in the second half, I was in it until the end. It‘s a long book and certainly felt that way in parts. But, in the end, I liked it. It‘s just a bit of a commitment.

On a whim, I chose this book off the International Man Booker long list. I think inspired by @rockpools yearly deep dive into this prize list. Why I chose the chunkiest book? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Masochism? Anyhow, no matter how interesting I make this review sound most of my friends here would hate this book. You have been warned. (Generally my most tepid reviews get the most stack adds 😂😂) I almost gave up on this half way. But I ended up liking it. ⬇️

Centique It has a surreal, farcical side that I liked. The boring bits, for me, were the realistic parts - some of which dragged. A hundred pages shorter would have made a big difference to my 3 star rating I‘m sure. 2y

Centique Looking at Good Reads this is the kind of book that gets 5 stars or 1 star. A marmite book! 2y

rockpools 😂😂😂Apologies for putting you through that. I haven‘t been able to get hold of this one yet - very tempted to stack it though, just to prove your point about tepid reviews😜. (Totally off the point, but Gah! Reviews! I should write some of those!) My question is: IS it joyful? The blurb describes it as joyful, which is not a word I trust on IBP reads… 2y

Centique @rockpools that is a really good question! It does celebrate weirdness and a bunch of unusual people although they are all falling apart in their own ways. So yes, but there was quite a lot of ennui from different characters to get through on the way. I‘m sure there‘s a lot more sunlight in this one though than some others! 2y

Centique @batsy thank you. It‘s tricky when a book is a chunkster - I wonder how much my review is influenced by how long it feels when you‘re in the middle. Maybe if I was a faster reader I would feel differently 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
