The Favor: A Novel | Nicci French
3 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
In this twisty new stand-alone novel from internationally bestselling author Nicci French, a young woman agrees to do a favor for her first love—but when things go horribly wrong, one small task turns into a murder investigation that completely upends her life, ensnaring her in a deadly web of secrets and lies. It’s a simple enough favor. Jude hasn’t seen Liam in years, but when he shows up at her work asking for a favor, she finds she can’t refuse. All Jude has to do is pick Liam up at a country train station—without telling anyone. So what if she has to lie to her fiancé? Jude is still committed to him and their imminent wedding, even if she and Liam were in love once. She owes him. After the car crash that changed everything years ago, bright, ambitious Jude went to medical school, back on the path she had planned before meeting moody, artistic Liam. Meanwhile, he never fully recovered from the dark stain the accident left on his record. Now he’s gone. When the police show up at the station instead of Liam, Jude realizes that she knows nothing about the man he’s become. Now she’s tangled up in his life, the last person to have seen him, and maybe the only one who can uncover the truth about what went wrong—even if she destroys her own life in the process.

There‘s a mystery genre that is characterized by a form of misogyny. An otherwise intelligent, competent woman makes a series of inexplicable choices and mistakes. Her life is usually almost ruined; chaos follows in her wake. This is what we are offered in this story about Jude, Liam, and a favor. All the characters are broken, with the possible exception of the child: Alfie. I have no idea why I finished it. I‘m sorry I did!

I started this yesterday and was annoyed by the idiocy of the main character. But, I received an invitation from the publisher to read it on NetGalley, so I tried to push through and picked it back up. I can‘t listen to anymore. Jude is an idiot and she continues to make unbelievably bad choices. It‘s painful to read.

BookLineNSinker I had trouble with this one too... Don't feel bad lol! 1y
Cinfhen You tried! And that‘s what matters!!! 1y
DGRachel @BookLineNSinker @Cinfhen I gave it to the 33% mark, which was more than fair. 😂 1y

Cinfhen Agreed!!!!! 1y
TrishB That‘s disappointing. I normally love their books! 1y
DGRachel @TrishB I‘d be willing to try another of their books, as the writing quality was good. I just couldn‘t tolerate the MC. Is there one you‘d particularly recommend? 1y
TrishB I love the Frieda Klein series, excellent characters and writing. There are 7 in the series and then it‘s finished. 1y
DGRachel @TrishB Perfect, thank you! 1y

Mehso-so

This was lack luster for me. The narrator is a popular British narrator and it had to potential to be good, but I kept finding myself wondering why the main character was doing the things she was doing... A lot of it just didn't make sense to me.
