Last Respects
Last Respects | Catherine Aird
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
In this C. D. Sloan Mystery by CWA Diamond Dagger winner Catherine Aird, a body is found in the riverbut the victim didnt drown When local fisherman Horace Boller decided to row his boat out on the tidal backwash of the river one morning, he couldnt have meant to land a catch like this. What he ended up with was a body floating on the rivers surface. And judging by the state of the corpse, the death was not a recent one. The strange thing is, the coroner report indicates that drowning was not the cause of death. Its up to the intrepid C. D. Sloanand his markedly less intrepid assistant, Constable Crosbyto investigate. Along the way, Calleshires most successful pair of puzzle-solving policemen will contend with a handful of additional strange deaths, befuddling municipal building codes, an antiquarian with interesting views on local history, and a fisherman who has his own motivation for helping (or perhaps hindering) the investigation. Can C. D. Sloan get to the bottom of this waterlogged killing?

Pickpick

One thing I like about the Sloan and Crosby series is how Aird gently educates the reader on a different topic in each book. This one incorporates the waters near and of the sea, the people who live on them, and the constabulary‘s place there.

A body found floating on the sea near the mouth of the river was not as simple a case as originally thought - as Dr. Dabbe‘s post-mortem (and entertaining insights) discover.

julieclair Ooohhh... I've never heard of this series. But the cover alone makes me want to read this book! Added to stack. 👍📚 1y
mabell @julieclair I really enjoy this series! Classic British cozies, with a unique writing style. The first was written in 1966, and the most recent in 2019 - the author is in her 90s! 1y

Librarybelle I didn‘t realize the series spanned so many years! 1y
mabell @TheAromaofBooks I really enjoy it! But also British cozies are my jam 🤣 1y
mabell @Librarybelle I know! It will be interesting to see how it evolves with time. I‘m just up to 1982, so only 15ish years from the beginning and this one didn‘t feel any more “modern.” (Which is a good thing!) 1y
