Terraformers | Annalee Newitz
4 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
From science fiction visionary Annalee Newitz comes The Terraformers, a sweeping, uplifting, and illuminating exploration of the future. Destry's life is dedicated to terraforming Sask-E. As part of the Environmental Rescue Team, she cares for the planet and its burgeoning eco-systems as her parents and their parents did before her. But the bright, clean future they're building comes under threat when Destry discovers a city full of people that shouldn't exist, hidden inside a massive volcano. As she uncovers more about their past, Destry begins to question the mission she's devoted her life to, and must make a choice that will reverberate through Sask-E's future for generations to come. A science fiction epic for our times and a love letter to our future, The Terraformers will take you on a journey spanning thousands of years and exploring the triumphs, strife, and hope that find us wherever we make our home. Brilliantly thoughtful, prescient, and gripping."--Martha Wells, The Murderbot Diaries Also by Annalee NewitzAutonomousThe Future of Another Timeline

A refreshing change for me: the idea that humans will still be around in 59,000 AD, working to keep all living things in balance on a terraformed planet. Very queer, anti-capitalist, uplifting solarpunk, told in 3 interconnected novellas over a vast timespan. Audiobook read by Emily Lawrence includes music & other sounds. #LGBTQ #SpeculativeFiction

In the environmental movement there‘s a lot of frustration because we want to fix things right now, but these are problems that took us generations to get into and they‘re going to be with us for generations to come.
—Annalee Newitz in an interview, when asked about the 16,000 year timespan of their novel.

TrishB Wow 😯 that‘s some timespan! 1y
TrishB And fab hair. 1y
Lindy @TrishB Indeed! (To both statements.) 1y

Kim Stanley Robinson meets Becky Chambers with more queer cuddling++ and a cast that looks a little like Guardians of the Galaxy but even more diverse (example: a sentient flying train), does that sell you on reading this yet? I was actually close to DNFing this early on—it‘s a challenging read with 1600-year-spanning ambition, yet I finished enraptured, immersed in this epic, inspiring story of planetary care and community over corporate greed.
