The Doomsday Mother: Lori Vallow, Chad Daybell, and the End of an American Family | John Glatt
6 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
In The Doomsday Mother, bestselling true crime author John Glatt tells the twisted tale of Lori Vallow, accused of having her two children murdered to start a new life with her new husband, doomsday prepper Chad Daybell. At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blonde and her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep to themselvesuntil the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell had fled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Loris children back in IdahoTylee and JJwho hadnt been seen alive in five months. For years, Lori Vallow had been devoted to her children and her Mormon faith. But when her path crossed with Chad Daybell, a religious zealot who taught his followers how to prepare for the end-times, the tumultuous relationship transformed her into someone unrecognizable. As authorities searched for Loris children, they uncovered more suspicious deaths with links to both Lori and Chad, including the death of Loris third and fourth husbands, her brother, and Chads wife. In June 2020, the gruesome remains of JJ and Tylee were discovered on Chads property, and the newlyweds were arrested and charged with murder. And in a shocking development, horrifying statements revealed that the couples fanatical beliefs had convinced them the children had become zombies--a belief that may have led to their deaths. Bestselling author and journalist John Glatt takes readers deeper into the devastating crimes of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell in an attempt to unravel the lethal relationship of this doomsday couple.

This is a fact driven account of Vallow, Daybell, and the murder of Vallow‘s two young children. If you‘ve been following this case, then most of this book is probably known to you and doesn‘t offer new information. You won‘t find new insights on the psychology of cults or end times paranoia, but if you are looking for a fast-paced true crime novel to get you up to speed while Vallow and Daybell are tried, this will do the job. 3⭐️

I really enjoyed Shaun Grindell‘s narration. I don‘t often listen to audiobooks–sometimes it seems like a narrator can influence my opinions and feelings about characters and events–but being as this is a true crime novel that influence did not exist. Grindell does a great job bringing the events to life and drawing the reader/listener in. Overall I enjoyed listening to Grindell‘s narration.

While I remember vaguely hearing about the disappearance of Tylee Vallow and JJ Ryan, this #TrueCrime book provided much more detail and background. I listened to this #audiobook in practically one sitting- as it proves the adage of truth being stranger than fiction… From end-of-days fringe groups, multiple marriages and manipulations from all angles, this is a twisting tale that turns tragic. I do hope a follow-up is planned for post-trial!

One of my struggles with true crime is that I‘ve often found the material dry, but that was not true of The Doomsday Mother. I felt the author presented the information in an engaging fashion that kept me hooked all the way through.
