The Tudors in Love
The Tudors in Love: The Courtly Code Behind the Last Medieval Dynasty | Sarah Gristwood
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
'One of the most important books to be written about the Tudors in a generation.' Tracy Borman 'A riveting, pacy page-turner... the Tudors as you've never seen them before.' Alison Weir Why did Henry VIII marry six times? Why did Anne Boleyn have to die? Why did Elizabeth I's courtiers hail her as a goddess come to earth? The dramas of courtly love have captivated centuries of readers and dreamers. Yet too often they're dismissed as something existing only in books and song - those old legends of King Arthur and chivalric fantasy. Not so. In this ground-breaking history, Sarah Gristwood reveals the way courtly love made and marred the Tudor dynasty. From Henry VIII declaring himself as the 'loyal and most assured servant' of Anne Boleyn to the poems lavished on Elizabeth I by her suitors, the Tudors re-enacted the roles of the devoted lovers and capricious mistresses first laid out in the romances of medieval literature. The Tudors in Love dissects the codes of love, desire and power, unveiling romantic obsessions that have shaped the history of this nation.

Mehso-so

The fact that it started off with King Arthur and the legends surrounding him, along with the concept of courtly love made the beginning drag a little; I picked up this book to read about the Tudors, not Arthur and Guinevere. Once it got more into their history I enjoyed it more. I also was pleasantly surprised that this novel went beyond just Henry VIII, including information about the love lives of his children as well.

Pickpick

The Tudors? Sure you know them. Henry VIII and his six wives, most famously Anne Boleyn. Queen Elizabeth I, the 'Virgin Queen'. Dig into this interesting book and go back in time to the time of courtly love.

Well researched. Very Interesting.

Published on December 13, 2022. (I had wrote down the wrong date, in earlier post🤦).

Today was the first day I missed living in London! Waterstones and Foyles both had 50% off every hardback in the store. Wow ! Mr K facilitated an unscheduled stop at a very small provincial branch and I had just 20 minutes. But I managed to make every minute count! Heaven knows what would of happened if I‘d of gone to a bigger store! 🤣

Mitch Do not think you‘ll walk out with just one or two @DGRachel 🤣🤣 2y
thewallflower0707 I saw their ads on social media and I was very sad that I am not in the UK. In Germany, we have our „Buchpreisbindung“, which means that books have to be sold at the same price everywhere and there are no discounts or bargains. 2y
Mitch @thewallflower0707 it used to be like that in the U.K. as well. I just hope it‘s a deal that sees big publishing houses fund and not authors 2y

Hooked_on_books Only 20 minutes?!? Better than nothing but so much pressure! 😂 2y
Mitch @Hooked_on_books I know right- but it was unscheduled and better than nothing! 2y
DGRachel I already know I‘ll come out with more than the two I‘m going for, but I do hope to keep myself under some tiny semblance of control. I may hold myself to 20 minutes just to keep exposure to other people at a minimum! 2y
Mitch @DGRachel that‘s exactly why I only got 20 mins! Turns out most probably for the best - for both books, bank account and health! 2y
