Tim Te Maro and the Subterranean Heartsick Blues
Tim Te Maro and the Subterranean Heartsick Blues | H. S. Valley
5 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
What happens when your enemy becomes your friend ... with benefits? Red, White and Royal Blue meets The Magicians in this surprising, wildly original and joyously funny LGBTQ YA novel set in a magical boarding school. Tim Te Maro and Elliott Parker - classmates at Fox Glacier High School for the Magically Adept - have never gotten along. But when they both get dumped the day before the big egg-baby assignment, they reluctantly decide to ditch their exes and work together. When the two boys start to bond over their magically enchanted egg-baby, they realise that beneath their animosity is something like friendship ... or physical attraction. Soon, a no-strings-attached hook-up seems like a good idea. Just for the duration of the assignment. After all, they don't have feelings for each other ... so what could possibly go wrong? From debut Kiwi author H.S. Valley, the latest winner of the Ampersand Prize, comes this gleefully addictive own-voices romantic comedy that's perfect for fans of Rainbow Rowell and David Levithan. In a word - it's magic.

Tim is in his last year at a magic boarding school under a glacier in New Zealand. He‘s emotionally reeling in the aftermath of his parents marriage crumbling & his dad moving away when he‘s dumped by his girlfriend the day before a major life skills (egg baby) assignment begins - and he agrees to instead parter with Elliot - a boy who he‘s disliked for most of his time at school.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Obviously these “enemies” soon become more with the egg baby assignment keeping them in very close proximity to each other for extended periods. Most of the book is about Tim and Elliots time together - with brief appearances by their respective friendship groups - and Tim‘s Mum, who is a teacher at the school. I would have liked a bit more of a focus on the magic stuff - but this was a very entertaining, slice of life kind of novel - that really 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag focuses on Tim‘s relationship with Elliot - and how they navigate years of misunderstandings to becoming friends to friends with benefits to boyfriends. There is no “big bad” to stop or world in need of saving - it‘s teenagers with feelings! 2y

Made a spectacle of myself by laughing pretty loudly at a conversation that centred around lube and ghosts.

Unexpected - but good points were raised. 😂😂 👻

(It was quite a glorious day to read at the beach - even if the sand at St Kilda is subpar)

CarolynM Subpar! Ha! That's generous. 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, it‘s a disgrace 😂 but I haven‘t been to the beach for like two years so I was feeling generous… 2y

I posted a picture of books I might read in October (which included this one) over on Instagram - and the author commented - and said she‘d answer all my questions? bake me a cake? eat it for me? - if I read it- which is maybe the funniest comment an author has left on one of my photos.

Lindy 🍰😂👍 2y
