100 Poems to Break Your Heart
100 Poems to Break Your Heart | Edward Hirsch
6 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
100 of the most moving and inspiring poems of the last 200 years from around the world, a collection that will comfort and enthrall anyone trapped by grief or loneliness, selected by the award-winning, best-selling, and beloved author of How to Read a Poem Implicit in poetry is the idea that we are enriched by heartbreaks, by the recognition and understanding of suffering--not just our own suffering but also the pain of others. We are not so much diminished as enlarged by grief, by our refusal to vanish, or to let others vanish, without leaving a record. And poets are people who are determined to leave a trace in words, to transform oceanic depths of feeling into art that speaks to others. In 100 Poems to Break Your Heart, poet and advocate Edward Hirsch selects 100 poems, from the nineteenth century to the present, and illuminates them, unpacking context and references to help the reader fully experience the range of emotion and wisdom within these poems. For anyone trying to process grief, loneliness, or fear, this collection of poetry will be your guide in trying times.

The title of Edward Hirsch's 100 Poems To Break Your Heart seems to be based off of a line from Mary Oliver's Lead, “Here is a story/ to break your heart.“ Rather than an anthology of romantic heartbreak, these are poems that encompass a broad range of subjects & tone. From Harryette Mullen's satirical takedown of bureaucratic language “We Are Not Responsible,“ to the Thomas Lux's “The People of the Other Village“ which tackles the absurdities of

vivastory international conflicts with surreal black humor, to Louise Gluck's lyrical meditation on the end of a relationship “Night Song“ to Marie Howe's heartstopping “What the Living Do.“ Hirsch is one of my favorite living literary critics & each poem is accompanied with a small essay containing biographical details, noteworthy info on the form, & why he included it in the anthology. I did not read the essays during this read through, but plan on 2y
vivastory doing so in the future. I did read all of the poems & it is a wonderful collection filled with both old favorites & surprises. (edited) 2y

This poem is incredible
"...My apologies to great questions for small answers.
Truth, please don't pay me much attention.
Dignity, please be magnanimous...
Soul, don't take offense that I've only got you now and then.
My apologies to everything that I can't be everywhere at once..."

batsy I love these lines. I've not read her and should remedy this soon. 2y
vivastory @batsy There's several on the poetry foundation site worth checking out 2y

I started the tagged book while making dinner & there are so many incredible works included. Each poem includes a small essay by Hirsch. I plan on reading those at some point. Hirsch is one of my favorite literary critics. For now I'm just reading the poems, several of which are established favorites.
