A genre-defying, continents-spanning saga of Korean myth, scientific discovery, and the abiding love that binds even the most broken of families. Elsa Park is a particle physicist at the top of her game, stationed at a neutrino observatory in the Antarctic, confident she's put enough distance between her ambitions and the family ghosts she's run from all her life. But it isn't long before her childhood imaginary friendan achingly familiar, spectral woman in the snowcomes to claim her at last. Years ago, Elsa's now-catatonic mother had warned her that the women of their line were doomed to repeat the narrative lives of their ancestors from Korean myth and legend. But beyond these ghosts, Elsa also faces a more earthly fate: the mental illness and generational trauma that run in her immigrant family, a sickness no less ravenous than the ancestral curse hunting her. When her mother breaks her decade-long silence and tragedy strikes, Elsa must return to her childhood home in California. There, among family wrestling with their own demons, she unravels the secrets hidden in the handwritten pages of her mothers dark stories: of womens desire and fury; of magic suppressed, stolen, or punished; of the hunger for vengeance. From Sparks Fellow, Tin House alumna, and Harvard graduate Angela Mi Young Hur, Folklorn is a wondrous and necessary exploration of the myths we inherit and those we fashion for ourselves.

Our main character, Elsa, is a very unlikeable character, but so is everyone else, no one is perfect, that‘s the point. It weaves the magic of ghosts into the trauma of being haunted by one- both living &dead, by showing the danger of repressed grief &mental illness. Elsa‘s brother tells the myths as just that myths but Elsa sees the warning of them &the history. This was tough to get through at parts but I really liked it. Please look up TW!!

Mehso-so

Folklorn was recommended by my #tailoredbookrecommendations by #bookriot.

Unfortunately I didn‘t love it… I struggled to keep reading at some points, as I found Elsa‘s low points repetitive and self destructive. The family dynamic here is really dark with an abusive dad and possibly addicted brother and it‘s unclear what the MC‘s mental health status is.

The connections drawn between Korean folklore and Elsa‘s family kept me going, but ⬇️

Soubhiville Ultimately I was left unsatisfied. 2y

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen

My two current reads are so vastly different! I hope to finish them both in the next couple of days, and I‘m really not sure what I‘ll be picking up next. I hoped to read Remote Control for a bookclub meeting next weekend, and it‘s very short so I still might. And my other bookclub is reading Little Fires, but that‘s two weeks away. The mood-read goddess will decide. 🙂📚

Bailedbailed

I did not finish this one. Elsa is an incredibly unlikable and insecure character. Some examples: harping on everyone's ethnicity, being hateful to another woman scientist because Elsa thought her kinda boyfriend might sleep with her, being jealous that a professor she met once might have a girlfriend that's not her. All of this happens in the first 100 pages. I couldn't take any more, so I bailed.

Pickpick

I really enjoyed “Folklorn”. It is an immigrant tale and very much focused on understanding and accepting family trauma. It also has a touch of mystery for spice.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 187.
