Jews Dont Count | David Baddiel

I think what was never understood by those in the Labour Party who became defensive around the issue of antisemitism between 2015 and 2019 is how scared, at base, Jews are. Jews, particularly those of my generation, were brought up under the shadow of the Holocaust. My mother was born in Nazi Germany. I only exist by the skin of my teeth.

Baddiel has a documentary coming out on C4 tomorrow looking at antisemitism in the UK, particularly amongst the progressive left. It‘s a separate project, but this is the book (personal long essay really) it stemmed from - a quick, thought-provoking read.

He argues that antisemitism is seen as a ‘lesser‘ form of discrimination, without the consequences and outrage & often characterised by victim-blaming. I found it eye-opening & quite shocking.

batsy I hadn't heard of him until I saw your review and saw this on twitter, and it's troubling to see. Is this something he acknowledges in his book? https://twitter.com/jrc1921/status/1594606045976043522?t 1y
rockpools @batsy I think I‘m having a live-and-learn experience on this one. He did acknowledge it as something done along time ago and regretted, I knew he‘d met with Jason Lee for the documentary, and I‘d read some more comments and criticisms after I‘d finished. But I hadn‘t seen that interview, and I hadn‘t understood that this (ie just now) was the point at which he was apologising. 1y
batsy @rockpools That's good that it's something that he did acknowledge in the book. At least it wasn't being brushed aside. 1y
rockpools In his AbsoluteLEE podcast interview with Baddiel, Jason Lee (black footballer who was subject to widespread racist bullying due to one of Baddiel‘s TV programmes in the 1990s) suggests that maybe one of the reasons Baddiel‘s message about antisemitism isn‘t getting through, could be that Baddiel is the one presenting it. Without doubt the overt racism, sexism and homophobia that Baddiel has shown in past shows make this an awkward read. 1y
rockpools Despite this, I‘ve come away from the book with that bit more understanding of antisemitism in the UK. But I also recognise his viewpoint comes from his very particular experience So maybe I should say I‘ve learnt about one experience of antisemitism in the UK. He‘s a long way from speaking for all those on the receiving end of antisemitism, and I‘ll keep on reading more diverse books to (try and) learn, understand and be an ally. 1y

Starting fall now #booked2021 #jewishauthor
With this very interesting essay by British comedian David baddiel about anti semitism and that it is a racism ignored at a period when society is very aware of discrimination in all forms but the stereotypes from Fagan to greedy bankers which informed the historic dislike +persecution of Jewish people still influences the language of politics +media.

An important book (more like a long essay, and a very fast read) for anyone who wants to be an ally and fight against all types of racism and bigotry in this world.

“...Jews are the only objects of racism who are imagined - by the racists - both low and high status. Jews are stereotyped, by the racists, in all the same ways that other minorities are - as lying, thieving, dirty, vile, stinking - but also as moneyed, privileged, powerful and secretly in control of the world. Jews are somehow both sub-human and humanities secret masters.” This is a brilliant book - witty, thought provoking and important.
