If your house were on fire, what one thing would you save? Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park explores different answers to this provocative question in linked poems that capture the diverse voices of a middle school class. Illustrated with black-and-white art. When a teacher asks her class what one thing they would save in an emergency, some students know the answer right away. Others come to their decisions more slowly. And some change their minds when they hear their classmates responses. A lively dialog ignites as the students discover unexpected facets of one anotherand themselves. With her ear for authentic dialog and knowledge of tweens priorities and emotions, Linda Sue Park brings the varied voices of an inclusive classroom to life through carefully honed, engaging, and instantly accessible verse.

A perfect book for a Children‘s Book Club or a classroom read-aloud. Not only will it inspire lots of personal discussion but it provides an opportunity to talk about different kinds of poetic forms. It‘s also sensitive to the fact that kids experience life differently; some families don‘t look like others, some may be homeless, some may have experienced tragedy. It‘s short, insightful, & earnest but it doesn‘t feel heavy.

Intriguing premise: A teacher asks her students to share and discuss the one thing they would save if they‘re home were on fire, family and pets excluded. In a collection of connected see Sijo verses (Korean patterned poetry), the students‘ loves and fears are revealed, culminating with the teacher‘s own revelation. Book 15 #MGMarch #middlegrademarch
