A book largely about food requires a food pic, right?

Despite the title, this story was entirely sweet to me, a debut YA romance wrapped in family drama, immigration issues, and delicious-sounding recipes. I did enjoy the Xander-narrated chapters more than the Pen ones, but I‘m not really sure why.

When I didn‘t think I could like the book more, the author acknowledgements include a whole page praising teachers!

Penelope Prado wants to follow i her father footsteps, sharing her love of food and Xander Amaro is trying to find a place where he belongs.

I loved this book! I loved how the author didn‘t make Pen‘s depression+anxiety the main focus of the book but instead it was another aspect of Pen. How she got through her tough and regular moments every day. It‘s realistic for the culture and how someone deals with it day to day.

Pen is kicked out of her house and loses her job after her parents find out she stopped going to college. Pen realizes that if she wants to make her own choices she needs to find her own job and apartment.

The story deals with a lot of issues family, friends, immigration, police, bullies and more.

I liked the overall story and I really liked the characters but I found some of it to be a little cheesy and a little too convient. B+
