The Black Panther Party
The Black Panther Party: A Graphic Novel History | David F. Walker
9 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
A bold and fascinating graphic novel history of the revolutionary Black Panther Party. Founded in Oakland, California, in 1966, the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense was a radical political organization that stood in defiant contrast to the mainstream civil rights movement. This gripping illustrated history explores the impact and significance of the Panthers, from their social, educational, and healthcare programs that were designed to uplift the Black community to their battle against police brutality through citizen patrols and frequent clashes with the FBI, which targeted the Party from its outset. Using dramatic comic book-style retellings and illustrated profiles of key figures, The Black Panther Party captures the major events, people, and actions of the party, as well as their cultural and political influence and enduring legacy.

There have been several Black Panther related movies in the past few years that focus on different times and members, so it was good to read this comprehensive and accessible history of the party and its prominent members. Conflicting ideologies and a relentless suppression campaign by the government meant it would never succeed, but the lengths that the government went to to stop the organization is horrific and so blatant. (CONTINUED ➡️)

TieDyeDude Even this sympathetic telling couldn't help but focus on the controversy over the trendsetting social programs the party created. There was so much potential that it is quite tragic when they fail. 1y

A nuanced, detailed history of the Black Panther revolutionary movement, showing the unjust circumstances leading up to its formation, its leadership troubles, its positive effects, & the considerable extent that the FBI played a role in undermining Black Panther activities through false accusations & arrests of party leaders. Anderson‘s colourful art focuses on individual people. Walker‘s text makes a complex subject clear. #comics #blackhistory

Suet624 I‘m really glad people are writing about the Panthers. I always appreciated what they were doing to care for their community. 2y
Lindy @Suet624 One of the many things that struck me while reading this book is how little has changed over the years. 2y

J Edgar Hoover: The Black Panther Party, without question, represents the greatest threat to the internal security of the country.

At its peak, the free breakfast program operated in nearly 40 cities, with larger cities like Los Angeles running multiple breakfast programs in different locations.
