Scant years after the Civil War, a mysterious family confronts the legacy that has pursued them across centuries, out of slavery, and finally to the idyllic peace of the town of Rosetree. The shattering consequences of this confrontation echo backwards and forwards in time, even to the present day.

We have finished out #litereads selection The Devil in America by Kai Ashante Wilson. It took us awhile to get through this one (and thank you all for your patience while I dealt with personal stuff). This dark historical fantasy story is a tragic tale set in Reconstruction era USA. I personally thought the story was incredible and devastating! Full review in the link below. Let me know in the comments what you thought.

Due to the passing of my grandmother this week, I'll be extending our final #blackhistorymonth #litereads selection by a week. The Devil in America by Kai Ashante Wilson will be a double week selection, and my own review will be available next saturday, with a new selection next sunday (march 8). Thank you for your patience, and I hope you enjoy the story.

This short tale about the legacy of old African magic, the loss of knowledge about it, the impact of slavery, and its implications for the present day was an interesting and sad read; it was made especially powerful because I‘d just recently finished Kindred.

An amazing short story combining racial tensions in the 1800s with the devil‘s seduction of a young girl. Very disturbing and very good.

Man, I wish I had someone to talk about this story with! Despite enjoying it, there‘s a gnawing feeling in my gut that I missed something, so I‘m going to reread it. There‘s a lot packed into this short story.

Tamra Intriguing! 6y
Libby1 @Angitron - that cover! 😱 6y
Angitron @Libby1 Yeah it‘s disturbing, huh? 6y
Angitron @Tamra I‘ve never read another story like it, that‘s for sure! 6y

Sometimes I wonder if I should even bother drawing up a TBR each month, since I feel like I always get a bit off track. 😂 Anyway, here are my (maybe) reads for Nov. October was a slow reading month for me. I launched a horror film podcast, which took up a lot of free time, so I‘m still working through some intended Oct books. Now that I have a better idea of what I‘m doing, I hope to get back to reading more! 😊

MicheleinPhilly 2 of these were 5 ⭐️ reads for me. ☺️ 6y
Jess7 The Hate U Give was good. @MinDea and I have our final #litsybuddyread discussion for it this Sunday, 11/5 if you finish in time 6y
UrsulaMonarch Looking forward to hearing how the tagged book is, and my TBR has ! 6y

Angitron @MicheleinPhilly Ooh which ones? I‘m glad to hear that! 6y
Angitron @Jess7 Oh man, I wish I could! I haven‘t even started it, and I‘m going to a very (VERY) long opera that day. I hope you guys have a great discussion! 😊 6y
Angitron @Lkelly SGiYE is really, really wonderful so far. The writer acknowledges the awkwardness of the topic in such a great way, and there‘s very dark humor scattered throughout - the kind where you‘re like, “I probably shouldn‘t be laughing at this, but...” Devil in America - OY. Punch to the gut. It‘s a short story and I feel like I missed some of the nuance, so I‘m re-reading. Free on TOR.com! (edited) 6y
Angitron @Lkelly And my podcast is called Ambient Light. It‘s a horror film recommendation podcast! 😊 (edited) 6y
