Snow Killings: Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation
Snow Killings: Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation | Marney Rich Keenan
3 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Over 13 months in 1976--1977, four children were abducted in the Detroit suburbs, each of them held for days before their still-warm bodies were dumped in the snow near public roadsides. The Oakland County Child Murders spawned panic across southeast Michigan, triggering the most extensive manhunt in U.S. history. Yet after less than two years, the task force created to find the killer was shut down without naming a suspect. The case "went cold" for more than 30 years, until a chance discovery by one victim's family pointed to the son of a wealthy General Motors executive: Christopher Brian Busch, a convicted pedophile, was freed weeks before the fourth child disappeared. Veteran Detroit News reporter Marney Rich Keenan takes the reader inside the investigation of the still-unsolved murders--seen through the eyes of the lead detective in the case and the family who cracked it open--revealing evidence of a decades-long coverup of malfeasance and obstruction that denied justice for the victims.

Another not widely know serial murder. In the 70s several children went missing and were then found dead. Nobody has ever been charged with the murders. This happened in the suburbs of Detroit. What was uncovered was a deep and thriving child sex/porn network involving auto executives and children of executives.
There was/is speculation of cover ups and incredibly bungled police work.

OrangeMooseReads While named ‘Oakland County Child Killer‘ the children were found in multiple counties even if just over the boarder. 11mo

A very difficult read, which I do recommend but with a very serious trigger warning for child sexual abuse. As well as the crimes here being horrifying, and they are some of the most horrifying I‘ve read about, the way the families of the victims were ignored and treated with no respect by the authorities was terrible to read about. A good, well-researched telling of a horrible story.

JamieArc My mother-in-law was a social worker in that area at the time and remembers this. I should read this book. 3y

My mission for today is to get things sorted at my new place with my boyfriend and (while he‘s out picking things up) make progress on the tagged book for #scarathlon2021. It‘s a very dark and difficult read, and I might not have picked it if I‘d known about the terrible violence towards children it describes, but it feels important to learn about the many ways the system failed these children and how investigations like this need to be managed
