Pursued by a drunken mob, the quarry is running for its life. When the frantic creature bursts into the nave to claim sanctuary, Brother Cadfael finds himself fighting off armed townsmen to save a terrified young man. Liliwin, a wandering minstrel who performed at the wedding of a local goldsmiths son, has been accused of robbery and murder. The cold light of morning, however, will show his supposed victim, the miserly craftsman, still lives, although a strongbox lies empty. Pickpick

This was my least favorite of the Brother Cadfael books I‘ve read so far. Each book has had some story about star-crossed lovers for whom Cadfael has a soft heart. First, this theme throughout the series is getting tedious. Second, one of the star-crossed lovers in this book is just irritating, making stupid illogical decisions that Cadfael et al ”forgive”. Still, I like the series, the mysteries, & the regular characters. So 3 stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

1. Tagged, plus Crucible, and The Last Conversation
2. Book 8 from Brother Cadfael series
3. I have had only one 5-star read this year (I‘m stingy with them. I have lots of 4-1/2 star reads.) It‘s The Rescue by Steven Konkoly that I read in March! My last 4-1/2 star read was a nonfiction Audible original, The Dead Drink First
