Western Civilization to 1500
Western Civilization to 1500: The Continuing Experiment | Thomas F. X. Noble
16 posts | 1 read
Western Civilization leads the market as the first western civilization text to include a separate chapter on Late Antiquity and the first to use the new political history, the effect of power and politics on all members of society, at the center of its narrative. Recognizing that European history was affected by factors outside the continent, this text looks at Europe by examining its place in the world. With an emphasis on the experimental nature of political and social history, the text challenges students to explore why and how history unfolded as it did.

This book is a great textbook for any introductory world or European history class. Even though I studied history in college, I still learned many new facts from this book.

I find it interesting that Italy, the country of the Vatican was the most secular country at the end of the Middle Ages/beginning of the Renaissance. One would think Italy would be the most religious as the Pope sits in Rome, but it seems if other countries were more religious. It is possible because maybe the other countries were trying too hard to show the Pope a fake piety that ended up hurting their overall progress.

I haven‘t heard that David was formerly a Phillistine mercenary. This tiny detail should be discussed more.
