Alone With the Stars
Alone With the Stars: A Story of Amelia Earhart | David R. Gillham
7 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
In the summer of 1937, Amelia Earhart is the most famous woman in the world - a record-breaking pilot, a best-selling author, and a modern woman shattering the glass ceiling in the early days of aviation.
And then she vanishes.
In Tampa, Florida, 15-year-old Lizzie Friedlander spends her afternoons glued to her father's radio, tapping into the enormity of a world she longs to travel. Lizzie can hardly believe her ears when she picks up a radio signal from a faraway source that sets her heart racing: "Amelia Earhart calling SOS!"
As Lizzie copies down the transmissions, it's clear that the Amelia Earhart is not lost at sea, as the newspapers are dreading, but alive and calling for help. In a race against time, Lizzie must convince the local Coast Guard that the radio transmissions were real and that Earhart's life hangs in the balance. But will anyone believe her?

Unsolved mysteries are always intriguing for me. The tragic disappearance of Amelia Earhart is one of those captivating mysteries. This is a short story about A. E.‘s disappearance in 1937. Portions of the story are told from A.E.‘s perspective while flying. Lizzie, age 15, hears A.E.‘s distress call. Excited to learn that A.E. is alive and asking for help when everyone else fears A.E. is lost at sea. ✈️

I thought this audible short was okay. I found it intriguing but kind of a let down in the end.

Texreader That describes how I felt about it too. 4y

1937, Tampa, Florida. 15 year old Lizzie Friedlander picks up Amelia Earhart's distress signal on her father's radio.
Interesting and informative, but maybe a little too short.

Alone with the Stars is a short audiobook that switches between narrators (both excellent): Amelia Earhart and a teen girl Lizzie who hears Earhart call for help on her dad‘s shortwave radio. I felt the order of the content distracting—at a dark time in Earhart‘s story, Lizzie‘s story feels a little too bright. And a Warning: The story contains an anger-inducing act of misogyny. Overall an interesting listen.

bookishnerd I have this one, too. I will be curious to see what I think! 4y

I chose this as one of my free audible originals for this month, even though I had never heard of it. It‘s only a little over two hours long, so I finished it quickly and really enjoyed it. The concept is fascinating, and they did a really good job on the audiobook, right up to the engine sound in the background for AE‘s parts. I definitely recommend this one.

My new audiobook, free this month from Audible. I'm not very far into it but so far, it's very good.
