An old game helps a new kid find his footing. It is Davids first day at his brand-new school. He doesnt know anyone. At recess, he stands alone and watches the other children enjoying their activities on the playground, from practicing soccer moves and climbing monkey bars to playing hopscotch and daydreaming in the grass. Bundled deep inside Davids pocket is a string of rubber bands, knotted and ready for a game of elastic skip. But will anyone want to try that game? he wonders. Will anyone want to play with him? Sometimes youve got to stretch yourself to find the place where you belong.

This RF book “David Jumps In” by Alan Woo and Katty Maurey is about the first day of school! It can help raise confidence levels of our students and the overall message is that you should just “jump right in” in life! #UCFLAE2414SP21 https://www.getepic.com/book/80841917/david-jumps-in this site has a read aloud as well as other book information. It would also be cool to teach the students the game “elastic skip” from the book!

ReaganT This book works well with ESOL strategy 3- encourage self-talk (positive thinking) and UDL principle 9.1 promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation! 3y
DrSpalding Really like the message that this book conveys. This would be a quality realistic fiction title to read aloud during the first week of school. Your English learner strategy and universal design principle work beautifully. Nice alignment. 3y

OMG I have not played elastic skip in so long. It wasn‘t a thing in state side schools (military brat here). To see a kid who hope someone will play with him so they can pass the game on…. So sweet. All around a pretty sweet book with illustrations to match.
