The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida
The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida | Clarissa Goenawan
6 posts | 8 read | 13 to read
From the critically acclaimed author of Rainbirds comes a novel of tragedy and dark histories set in Japan. University sophomore Miwako Sumida has hanged herself, leaving those closest to her reeling. In the months before her suicide, she was hiding away in a remote mountainside village, but what, or whom, was she running from? To Ryusei, a fellow student at Waseda; Chie, Miwakos best friend; and Fumi, Ryuseis older sister, Miwako was more than the blunt, no-nonsense person she projected to the world. Heartbroken, Ryusei begs Chie to take him to the village where Miwako spent her final days. While he is away, Fumi receives an unexpected guest at their shared apartment in Tokyo, distracting her from her fear that Miwakos death may ruin what is left of her brothers life. Expanding on the beautifully crafted world of Rainbirds, Clarissa Goenawan gradually pierces through a young womans careful faade, unmasking her most painful secrets.

This is my second Goenawan book; I love the slow, reflective quality of her writing. Like RAINBIRDS, this book also revolves around a central character whose suicide or murder leaves a mystery for loved ones to piece together.

The 80s Tokyo setting was great, and the rich characters were a delight. Although we know how the story ends, it still managed to surprise. Looking forward to her next book, WATERSONG. #japan #hoopla

The Perfect World Of Miwako Sumida falls in the murky middle of the Venn diagram between literary fiction and conventional mystery. Miwako Sumida is like the anti-Manic Pixie Dream Girl. This is a deep cut examination of what happens to a life left behind. My full review here: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/new-releases/

I enjoyed the author‘s earlier Rainbirds and this novel had the same slow unraveling and dreamy, ghostlike qualities. #ARC #Edelweiss

5/5⭐️
A beautiful read on friendship, love, grief and personal histories. Understated prose that conveys depth and intimacy reminiscent of Murakami. Loved it ♥️
