This should be a definite read for anyone who likes to read about the American Civil War. In a very academic approach, Miller examines the limited documents on amputation in the Confederate Army (the southern states) and the lasting effects, both physical and psychological, as well as southern society‘s view of those missing a limb. Very informative and very eye opening.
And yes - this truly shows my eclectic reading taste!
rubyslippersreads This makes me think of that scene in Gone With the Wind, “Don‘t cut!” 4y
Leftcoastzen Wow , I had heard they learned a lot about it , so much practice, unfortunately.Any anesthesia or liquor and a rag stuffed in your mouth? 4y

Librarybelle @rubyslippersreads Gone With the Wind is actually referenced, as Hollywood‘s inaccurate portrayal of the hospital. I know the scene to which you refer! 4y
Librarybelle @Leftcoastzen It depended upon what was available, and if chloroform was available, if the patient refused or not, since it was so new and people died from it (the right amount to administer wasn‘t quite universalized at the time). Cases involving no anesthesia or using alcohol to dull the senses were referenced. 4y
Librarybelle Thanks, @Crazeedi ! 4y
