Didn't care for it. Lucy has a found guilty of murder and is to hang. Goes from present to past. Lucy is the only one that knows if she murdered or not. Felt like author wanted to write a mystery, but it fell short to me.

This reminded me a little of The Confessions of Frannie Langton, in that it was about a maid (but not a black slave this time) who is guilty of murder and awaiting their sentence to be carried out. It‘s dark, brooding, and has a wholly unreliable narrator. I really enjoyed it. It‘s set in New Hampshire instead of London, and the MC always has the option to leave (unlike Frannie). Worth a read!

Things in the Burton household take a darker turn when Lucy Blunt arrives to beg for a job. Employed as the kitchen maid, she soon aims for higher things, the job as companion to Mrs Burton, & she won‘t let Rebecca stand in her way. Lucy is devious & manipulative, but is she a killer? 4🌟
