…there were to be grand doings in this new parliament; the people wasn‘t going to stand it no longer, not if the right gentleman got in […]. Beer would be ever so much cheaper and every poor man would have a fat pig in his sty. That is, if Mr Bramdean, as was the people‘s friend, got in.

Some epithets in this novel include: “a sneaking hypercriting old cat of a goody,” and “a drunken, trapesing good-for-nothing jade.”
(I learned that jade can refer to a disreputable woman.)

twohectobooks I feel like “jade” is one I‘ve seen a few times with that meaning, but I can‘t remember where. 5y
Lindy @twohectobooks 🧐I remember coming across goody (The Scarlet Letter?) but not jade. 5y
Hooked_on_books Sounds like some great diction and syntax in this one! 5y

LeahBergen My Nan used to use the word “jade” in that sense. She‘d say, “That (so and so) is an old jade” 😆😆 5y
Lindy @Hooked_on_books Yes! I think @shawnmooney might be using this book for an entire In Other Words episode on his booktube channel. 5y
Lindy @LeahBergen Oh! Perhaps @twohectobooks has heard it in person also? 5y
twohectobooks @Lindy @leahbergen I don‘t think so! Maybe somewhere in LM Montgomery? It seems like a word she might use. 5y

…there were, near the bottom, signs of a mass of daffodils, which filled the sisters with delight, though daffodils were not then the fashion, and were rather despised as yellow and scentless.

Starting a buddy-read with @shawnmooney today. An ebook is perfect for travelling. I‘m not just going to Toronto, I‘m also travelling to Georgian England. ✈️

Suet624 Nice! 5y
shawnmooney Are you wearing invisible green? 😍 5y
Lindy @shawnmooney Ha! I would be if I had anything dark green, just so I could use the colour name. Love that kind of trivia. 5y
