It's Not Ok to Feel Blue (and Other Lies): Inspirational People Open Upabout Their Mental Health
It's Not Ok to Feel Blue (and Other Lies): Inspirational People Open Upabout Their Mental Health | Scarlett Curtis
8 posts | 1 read | 7 to read
Last year, Scarlett Curtis and 52 inspirational women wrote an extraordinary anthology on what feminism means to them. The book went on to be a cultural phenomenon and turned the world Pink. This year, it's Blue. We are living in the middle of a mental health epidemic and we have a choice- we can be floored by it - or we can start to make a difference. Here are the extraordinary people making that difference. Other People Don't Feel Blue (and other lies) is a collection of words from those who have suffered through the worst, and know what it's like to fight to feel better. This isn't just a book. It's a shout, a scream that cuts above the noise and lets everyone know they are not alone. Funny, sad, clever, relatable it will be a shining example of the power of words to make us all feel better.

Pickpick

I had purchased this as a 99p kindle deal that popped up a while ago, and wasn‘t sure what to expect. When I read non-fiction it is rarely a collection of writing like this. But I was pleasantly surprised. Each piece gave a small insight into someone‘s life, be it their battle with their mental health, an obituary to a loved one, a little cartoon, song lyrics, or coping strategies.

This book aims to show that you are not alone.

And, despite what The Cure suggested,
Boys can be very good at it.”

“Everyone knows that, as animals are nature, then we are nature. And most of us are aware that – it hardly takes much lateral thinking – if we are part of nature, then we are also dependent on the rest of nature. And, let‘s be honest, nature is not having a great time right now. So, maybe the problems we are causing in the natural world – and they are so devastating it can be hard to absorb – are linked to the problems going on inside our heads.”

“The problem is, we don‘t know how to be unhappy.”

“Being miserable is not the same as being depressed. Being stressed and afraid is not the same as having an anxiety disorder. Have we all got a bit confused? In our quest to live happy, productive lives, have we forgotten that it is normal to have periods when we feel low, afraid, unhappy? When we feel low, do we then spiral into something darker as we loathe ourselves for our vulnerability...”

Chrissyreadit Yes!!! A LOT of the mental health work is explaining that emotions are normal. They are meant to inform and provoke us- to seek help, comfort, others, or move on, different places and different things. To improve ourselves and our surroundings. I also know that unhealthy expectations around school and work and relationships are for super humans not humans. And no one is super human. 3y
