Half a Life: A Memoir | Darin Strauss
3 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
In this powerful, unforgettable memoir, acclaimed novelist Darin Strauss examines the far-reaching consequences of the tragic moment that has shadowed his whole life. In his last month of high school, he was behind the wheel of his dad's Oldsmobile, driving with friends, heading off to play mini-golf. Then: a classmate swerved in front of his car. The collision resulted in her death. With piercing insight and stark prose, Darin Strauss leads us on a deeply personal, immediate, and emotional journeygraduating high school, going away to college, starting his writing career, falling in love with his future wife, becoming a father. Along the way, he takes a hard look at loss and guilt, maturity and accountability, hope and, at last, acceptance. The result is a staggering, uplifting tour de force. Mehso-so

When the author was 18 he killed a girl from his high school in a car accident. It was not his fault,he was neither drunk nor driving recklessly,it was bad luck. This book is his account of “half a life” lived with guilt&he tries to be honest&vulnerable.Even though he writes with sincerity,I couldn‘t connect with him, with what happened&neither with the victim.I‘m not sure if it‘s the writing or because of the trauma, but it feels cold&disconnected.

"Things don't go away. They become you."
High school senior Darin Strauss was driving through town when a younger classmate of his darted out on her bike, smashed into his windshield, was thrown into a median and died within minutes. This memoir not only tells this important story, but he's able to elaborate delicately and wisely his traumatic stress as well as the others who are affected by the tragedy. Can't stop thinking about it. Stunning.

Loving the writing in Darin Strauss's HALF A LIFE. Like this, describing the feeling of having a newborn baby: "...sleep was a coating I'd been deprived of, leaving my wiring all exposed." YES.
