When the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts, it's up to six university students and their experimental physics project to prevent the end of civilization. When an experiment to study quantum uncertainty goes spectacularly wrong, physics student Richard and his friends find that they have accidentally created an inter-dimensional portal. They connect to an alternate Earth with identical geology, but where humans never evolved. They go panning for gold and become millionaires overnight, while fantasizing about Nobel Prizes and patents. Then the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts on Earth in an explosion large enough to destroy civilization and kill half the planet. Richard and his friends have less than an afternoon to get as many people as possible across to Outland before Nebraska is covered in a lethal cloud of ash. Now Richard finds himself in charge of a disorganized and frightened band of reluctant pioneers, on a world with none of the modern infrastructure that people have come to depend on. Richard has been a loner all his life, and has always wanted to be part of something bigger but this is far more than he bargained for. If he doesn't get this right, it's not just the lives of the people in his care that could be lost it may very well be the end of human civilization.

What a terrific book! Wow. This hit every note for me. Lots and lots of scienceing and engineering. Smart people, geek references throughout, and a great plot. And, despite world disaster, upbeat and hopeful.

If you don't like sciencing though, probably not for you. If you do though.... :)

TheSpineView I love this author. FYI, the 2nd book is out now. 9mo

This is the 2nd book in the Quantum Earth series. A group of young scientists have discovered an alternative Earth and when the Yellowstone super valcanio erupts with a life ending event they and a group of others migrate to the alternate world in the hopes of rebuilding there. Unfortunately, the fresh start is not so fresh. Problems follow them and they must figure out how to live in this no tech world and set up some rules for the security..

TheSpineView ... and safely of all. Great characters in this story and I love how they have grown up since the first book. I think the author did an outstanding job with presenting realistic problems. A bit heavy on the political side but I get that it helped move the plot forward. 4.5 ⭐️ 14mo

This is a post apocalyptic story about a group of Students who figure out how to open a portal between alternate Earths. Then the Yellowstone super volcano erupts and they find themselves trying to get as many people to Rivendell (the name for an alternative world) as they can to start again. Well written with some surprises and a little bit science that makes it seem plausible. Enjoyable. 4.5⭐ for story and narration.

Don‘t read this book‘s blurb. It gives away a major plot point, and this event doesn't occur until about 5 or 6 hours into the audiobook. I would have liked this story more if I hadn‘t known this spoiler. I didn't read the entire blurb, but the spoiler is revealed in the first sentence! All in all, this is a good first installment in D.E. Taylor's new series, featuring Ray Porter, the narrator from the Bobiverse. Overall rating: 4.15 stars
