Name: Raine Benares Race: Elf Job: Seeker, a finder of the lost and missing. Objects or people, same price. Hazard pay: Negotiable. Problem du Jour: One stolen amulet with one heck of a consequence. I come from a family of pirates who make money with a ship and the business end of a cannon. I prefer to use business savvy and street smarts to stay employed and on the legal side of the law. So when my friend is blackmailed into stealing a powerful amulet from Nigel the Necromancer, my sense of fair play kicks in, which is how I end up with the amulet he stole hanging around my neck like fancy pearls. An amulet of unimaginable power. An amulet that now won’t come off. And to make it even worse, the stone is enhancing my magical power to scary levels. Now my name is at the top of the most-wanted list of both a goblin secret society and a mage military brotherhood. They want the amulet and the legendary soul-eating stone it’s connected to. I’d be happy to give it to them, but the price tag for removal is the soul of yours truly.

1 chapter in: Language use in this one is ... confusing.
Lots of almost-clichés and words wrongly used. ‘less savory members of my family would love to get their ransom-grubbing hands on‘; shouldn‘t that be ‘ransom-grabbing‘? Could be due to bad editing/ typesetting but there are lots of examples.

Mehso-so

Light fantasy entertainment. Essentially a standard urban fantasy but set in a fantasy world rather than the contemporary world. Doesn't stand out but more than fits the bill if you are looking for a mild diversion.

I finished this one in only a couple of days. A fairly fast read, an interesting setting, a very nasty bad guy, and a very appealing protagonist. Plus fun supporting characters. Definitely recommended to fans of epic and heroic fantasy with light comedy and light romance. #fantasy #bravegirls

Current read: a heroic fantasy with light comedic elements and some romance. So far, I am enjoying it. The heroine is an appealing combination of self-confident, snarky, and compassionate. I also like the setting: kind like Venice, with bridges and canals connecting the various real and artificial islands. #fantasy #bravegirls

ravenlee I've been reading Shearin's SPI series, and it's made me hesitant to read her other stuff. I kind of enjoy the story, but I read a prequel novella before I started the first book, and whole sections were cu-and-pasted between the two. It made me kind of mad, actually, so now I'm approaching the rest of the series with caution. I hope she's better than that. 6y
lyradora I actually read the prequel leprechaun story *after* I read the first two SPI novels. For whatever reason, that worked. 😊 6y

The writing became flat and repetitive, and the same can be said of the characters. The hard-boiled detective in a fantasy world can be done SO WELL (see Seanan McGuire's October Daye series), but this was just too predictable for my enjoyment. With no desire to read the rest of these adventures, I'm just glad it didn't end with a cliffhanger.
