Coming to My Senses
Coming to My Senses: A Story of Perfume, Pleasure, and an Unlikely Bride | Alyssa Harad
1 post | 2 read | 18 to read
A sudden love affair with fragrance leads to sensual awakening, self-transformation, and an unexpected homecoming At thirty-six—earnest, bookish, terminally shopping averse—Alyssa Harad thinks she knows herself. Then one day she stumbles on a perfume review blog and, surprised by her seduction by such a girly extravagance, she reads in secret. But one trip to the mall and several dozen perfume samples later, she is happily obsessed with the seductive underworld of scent and the brilliant, quirky people she meets there. If only she could put off planning her wedding a little longer. . . . Thus begins a life-changing journey that takes Harad from a private perfume laboratory in Austin, Texas, to the glamorous fragrance showrooms of New York City and a homecoming in Boise, Idaho, with the women who watched her grow up. With warmth and humor, Harad traces the way her unexpected passion helps her open new frontiers and reclaim traditions she had rejected. Full of lush description, this intimate memoir celebrates the many ways there are to come to our senses.

Ever since reading COMING TO MY SENSES I've wanted to learn more about perfume--so I finally made the trip to Twisted Lily in Brooklyn and I may be hooked. I recommend this book wholeheartedly for awaking your interest in scent--but let me just say that I warned you: you'll never smell things the same at again.

Books88 That is pretty awesome! 7y
Reviewsbylola I worked at Lush for a few years and the founders are very invested in scent and fragrances and how they make you feel. We received a lot of training on it and it was always super interesting. A lot of the tidbits we learned I reflect back to from time to time. 7y
SusanInTiburon I literally have boxes of perfumes. I have a shoebox full of custom samples, all alphabetized and indexed. 7y

SusanInTiburon Twisted Lily is now on my bucket list. 7y
FountainBookstore I collect perfumes too @SusanInTiburon. And I love this post. I've always found it frustrating that my nose gets "tired" and I can't try different smells for hours. But then that's also what makes scent even more ephemeral. Also recommended: Perfumes by Turin and a Sanchez. (edited) 7y
SusanInTiburon @FountainBookstore I love that book! My copy is so marked up I don't even NEED the index it should have had. 7y
FountainBookstore @SusanInTiburon You're right! That book didn't have an index. I think you and I should petition Penguin for an updated edition! For so many reasons. 7y
