Twilight: A Novel | William Gay
9 posts | 14 read | 25 to read
Suspecting that something is amiss with their fathers burial, teenager Kenneth Tyler and his sister Corrie venture to his gravesite and make a horrific discovery: their father, a whiskey bootlegger, was not actually buried in the casket they bought for him. Worse, they learn that the undertaker, Fenton Breece, has been grotesquely manipulating the dead.Armed with incriminating photographs, Tyler becomes obsessed with bringing the perverse undertaker to justice. But first, he must outrun Granville Sutter, a local strongman and convicted murderer hired by Fenton to destroy the evidence. With his poetic, haunting prose, William Gay rewrites the rules of the gothic fairytale while exploring the classic Southern themes of good and evil. From the Trade Paperback edition.

What a gory, graphic, seriously literary piece of Southern Gothic fiction!

I‘ve been writing for a horror site and you can check out my full review that discusses McCarthy and Gay together at https://hauntedmtl.com/horror-in-print/william-gays-twilight-southern-gothic-and...

This is quite a little nightmare of a book. Tyler and his sister discover that the undertaker has been doing unspeakable acts with the dead, so the undertaker sets a killer on them before they can expose his crimes. The chase through the wilderness is surreal and horribly real at the same time. I heard about this book from my new favorite podcast, The Librarian Is In. They were discussing books for Halloween, and this was highly recommended.

Sometimes you see a book in the library and just take a punt even though you're unaware of the author. So it was with what turned out to be this wonderfully very dark book, with a two villains including an undertaker and his hired thug Granville Sutter who is remarkable in his psychopathy.

batsy Sounds amazing. Stacked! I keep seeing one of his other books in the store but I haven't bought it (yet!). That one sounds good too. 7y

I read an interview where Gay said he wanted people to feel the emotion of a scene, and he did just that with this one. You can feel the rural Tennessee wilderness throughout the whole book. He weaves a beautifully dark tale that is the epitome of Southern Gothic.

This book is terrifying, emotionally devastating, and absolutely amazing. William Gay will not hold your hand, he will not protect you, and he will not care if you make it through in one piece. Godspeed and good luck, friend.
