Coming Through Slaughter
Coming Through Slaughter | Michael Ondaatje
3 posts | 12 read | 8 to read
Based on the life of cornet player Buddy Bolden, one of the legendary jazz pioneers of turn-of-the-twentieth-century New Orleans, Coming Through Slaughter is an extraordinary recreation of a remarkable musical life and a tragic conclusion. Through a collage of memoirs, interviews, imaginary conversations and monologues, Ondaatje builds a picture of a man who would work by day at a barber shop and by night unleash his talent to wild audiences who had never experienced such playing. But Buddy was also playing the field with two women, and inside his head was a ticking time-bomb which he was unable to stop.

Pickpick

I‘ve read most of Ondaatje‘s novels but not his first, set in early 20th century New Orleans, a fictionalized history of jazz musician Buddy Bolden. It was beautifully written but hard to follow in audio with a lot of poetry and multiple voices interwoven with the narrative so I found myself just absorbing the snippets of passionate writing about love, music, and mental health rather than following the plot.

Cinfhen Glad you were able to find a way to enjoy the story! I love audio but sometimes it‘s too difficult to follow. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I like his work — will have to check for this one! And maybe not on audio! 2y
